Zora never knew what Leighton liked. She watched him, trying to figure out his preferences.
“I like anything you pick for me.”
Leighton looked down at her and spoke softly.
His answer gave her no real clue.
Zora frowned. Her eyes landed on a set of figures on a nearby shelf, and she pulled Leighton
over.
“What do you think of these?”
Leighton followed her line of sight.
It was the Demon Boy and the Dragon Prince.
He knew the characters. Posters for their movie covered the streets lately.
He had watched the film with Zora a few days prior.
“Should I get both for you?”
Zora saw him stare at the figures and assumed he liked them. She waved for a clerk to take them down.
“Sure.”
Leighton nodded. He liked anything connected to her.
“So I’ll get these for you?”
Zora took the figures from the clerk and glanced at Leighton.

She never guessed he liked cartoon characters. She kept the thought in mind.
“Let’s check out.”
Zora did not want to stay in the shop any longer. The crowd made the small space feel tight.
They walked to the checkout counter.
Zora set the two figures on the counter and reached for their other bags so they could pay for everything together.
Leighton stopped her.

“Only pay for these two.”
He wanted the gift to come from her.
In the end, Zora paid for the figures she picked for him. Leighton covered all their other items.
“You’re hungry? Wanna eat something?”
They left the accessory shop. Leighton held their bags in one hand and kept her hand in his other.
The street grew more crowded. People stood shoulder to shoulder. Loose hands would get separated in the crowd.
Zora’s hands felt cold. Leighton tucked her hand inside his coat pocket to warm it.
“I’m hungry. I want cheese fondue. Hallie told me there’s a good shop nearby.”
Zora’s stomach ached for food.
Her routine stayed steady after moving in with Leighton. She felt hungry at regular meal times.
Life at the Knox Villa was different. Jolie always caused trouble, and Zora often missed meals.
Those two months at the Knox Villa threw her body rhythm off balance.
“Let’s go then.”
They walked toward the cheese fondue restaurant.
The restaurant was very popular. Every table filled up fast. It had solid reviews and fresh ingredients, so many people chose to eat there.
They arrived just as a group of guests finished their meal and left.
A server led them to an open table.
They skipped a private room. A public table worked fine for just the two of them.
“What drink do you want?”
“Milk! I want milk!”
Zora leaned over to look at the ordering tablet with him.
“You’re such a kid, drinking milk?”

Leighton smiled softly at her.
“What’s wrong with it?” Zora pouted.
She saw no issue with her favorite drink.

“Nothing’s wrong. Kids get to have their favorite milk. Two bottles are enough?” Leighton ticked the option for two bottles.
“Yep, that’s enough.” Zora nodded.
She left the rest of the ordering to Leighton after picking her drink.
He knew her food restrictions well and always picked meals with care.
Zora grew bored while he focused on the menu.
“Leighton…”
She stared straight at him.
“What is it?” Leighton asked while adding notes to their order.
“I haven’t checked your pulse in a while.”
Zora realized she had not done it for a long time.
He tricked her the last time, and she never got another chance.
Leighton tensed at her words.
He remembered the last pulse check. She told him she was leaving right after.
“No need. I feel fine.”
Leighton pulled his wrist back and kept his focus on the menu, dodging her hand.
He worried she would bring up leaving again.
“Just let me check.”
Zora ignored his refusal. She reached out quickly and grabbed his wrist before he could pull
away.
Leighton had no way to stop her.
He did not know she only did this to kill her boredom.

The second she touched his wrist, Leighton forgot about the menu. He stared down at her, waiting for her next move.
“Keep ordering. Don’t mind me. I’m just playing around.”
Zora had not placed her fingers on his pulse yet, but his gaze stayed locked on her hand.
She pushed his face gently to make him look away. She could not focus with him staring so hard.
Leighton froze.
She grew bold enough to push him now.
He read her expression clearly. She only felt bored and wanted to tease him, with no hidden thoughts.
