Chapter 382 News About Wayne
Holden looked nervous and stiff as he stared at the girl sitting across from him.
“It’s fine. Just tell me what you need to say. I have to go home soon.”
Zora glanced at the menu. Even a basic coffee cost hundreds of dollars.
She then looked at Holden’s plain button-up shirt. It was old, and the edges were frayed.
Before Zora could order anything, Holden waved the waiter over.
“One vanilla latte and one strawberry cake.”
The latte was three hundred and sixty-six dollars.
Just for one drink.
The strawberry cake was six hundred and sixty-six dollars.
Zora frowned.
“You don’t have to do this. Just get to the point. I’m allergic to cream anyway.”
“You’re allergic to cream?”
Holden froze on the spot.
She was allergic to cream…
All that time, they’d thought she’d pushed Jolie into the water over a cake.
The truth hit Holden hard, like a sharp pain in his chest.
A heavy, helpless sadness filled his heart.
Zora frowned when he zoned out and stayed silent.
“What exactly do you want to talk to me about?”
Holden squeezed his hands tight, trying to hold back his messy emotions.
“Zora… are your hands and knees all better now?”
His eyes swept over her hands and knees, full of sincere worry.
Before his family fell apart, Holden had heard Zora saved Floyd.

He’d wanted to reach out to her back then, but she’d blocked all his contact info.
When she hurt her hands and stayed home to recover, he had no way to see her.
Later, when she finally went back to school, his whole family crashed.
Everything hit him at once, and he was totally worn out.
By the time he got his life together, he had no right to look for her anymore.
On top of that, guards always picked her up and watched her after school.
“Just say what you need to say. I don’t have time for small talk.”
Zora’s tone was cold and straight to the point.

Holden wanted to say more, but her harsh words stopped him. Sorrow showed clearly on his face.
“Zora…” His voice was deep and rough.
“Mom wants to see you. She says she has news about Wayne for you.”
Zora set a time to meet Wendy on Saturday.
She told Leighton about it as soon as she got home that night.
Wayne was still missing. Leighton didn’t say much, but Noreen and Aaron never left Zora’s side.
As long as Wayne was hiding out, he was a hidden threat.
Leighton decided to go with Zora to see Wendy.

“Mr. Pierce, Ms. Hale.”
When they arrived at the prison, a staff member greeted them and led them to the visiting
room.
“Wendy’s inside.”
Zora stopped walking.
“Leighton, I’ll go in alone. Wait for me out here.”
Wendy had asked to meet only her.

Leighton frowned. He didn’t feel good about leaving her alone with Wendy.
“Don’t worry. She’s not dangerous anymore. She can’t hurt me.”
Zora smiled softly and tugged gently on his sleeve.
“I’m right outside. Call me if you need anything.”
Leighton’s heart softened right away at her small action.
She knew exactly how to get through to him. A simple tug was all it took to make him give in to anything she wanted.
“Alright.”
Zora handed him her beige scarf.
Leighton held the scarf on his arm and watched her walk in, keeping his eyes on her through the small glass window on the door.
As soon as Zora stepped inside, she saw Wendy sitting in a chair nearby.
She could barely recognize her.
Wendy’s long hair was cut short to her ears, revealing her tired, wrinkled face.
Her skin was dull and pale, her lips chapped and dry. Her eyes were empty and lifeless.
She sat with her head slightly down, hands cuffed on the table, wearing standard prison clothes with her back hunched over.
All her energy and spirit were gone.
She lifted her head when she heard the door open.
The second she saw Zora in her white puffer jacket and khaki skirt, a tiny spark of light returned to her eyes.
Her blank gaze slowly focused on Zora’s pretty face.
Mixed emotions flashed in her eyes.
Zora wore a beautiful crystal butterfly hair clip, with her soft, long hair loosely braided over one shoulder.
A crystal bracelet sparkled on her wrist.
She stood there gracefully, just like the daughter Wendy had once dreamed of having.

When she was pregnant and found out she was having a girl, she’d imagined raising her perfectly.
She’d wanted to give her little girl all the best things in the world.
But none of that ever happened.
She never got to have a real bond with her daughter.
She’d been a terrible mother, yet Zora had grown up so wonderfully without her.
“You’re here.”
Her voice was rough and worn, but calm-calmer than Zora had ever heard her.
“Do you know where Wayne is?” Zora sat down across from her, set her bag aside, and asked directly.
