Chapter 383 Too Late

Wendy looked at the bag Zora had set aside casually. It was a custom LV bag with a little white cat stitched on it, worth a few million.

Zora looked totally calm. She picked at the stitched cat design with her finger, like she had no clue how expensive the bag was.

Leighton wasn’t here, and she had nothing else to do.

“Is your grandpa feeling better?” Wendy asked.

She watched Zora picking at the bag without a single care about scratching it. Luxury items like this meant absolutely nothing to her.

A bitter feeling washed over Wendy. What was she even thinking? None of this mattered to her

anymore.

It was enough just to know Zora was living a good life.

“Yeah,” Zora answered plainly.

After everything that had happened between them, there was no way they could sit and talk nicely.

“Are your hands and knees fully healed?” Wendy ignored her cold tone. Her worn eyes scanned Zora’s wrists carefully.

She’d heard Zora did six hours of acupuncture nonstop once. Her hands had been shaking the whole time, and she’d knelt for six hours straight. Wendy worried her legs might have permanent issues.

Prison had taught Wendy how cruel the world could be. She’d suffered far worse treatment here than she’d ever given Zora.

Zora’s cold attitude felt gentle compared to what she dealt with every single day.

“I’m fine.” Zora’s voice was empty of any feeling.

“Have you been doing okay lately?” Wendy asked softly, her eyes lingering on Zora’s face with obvious longing.

Zora’s face was a little thinner now. She’d looked more like Wendy before she’d lost weight. Now, she also looked a little like her father. You had to look closely to see the resemblance to Wendy.

For the first time, real motherly warmth showed in Wendy’s eyes.

But it was too late. She’d realized all of this way too late.

She didn’t deserve to be Zora’s mother.

“I’m doing fine.” Zora frowned a little.

“Can you tell me about when you were a kid? You said someone choked you almost to death. Did that hurt your body permanently?” Wendy sounded truly worried.

Only after calming down in prison did she start thinking about all the terrible things Zora had gone through.

She’d been just a tiny baby when someone tried to kill her. Babies were so fragile. Any harm back then could leave lifelong damage. She’d barely survived, so there was no way her body was completely unhurt.

“No.” Zora stared at her worried look, completely unfazed, and turned her down.

Wendy had wanted her dead once. It was ridiculous to see her acting concerned now.

The faint hope in Wendy’s eyes faded, leaving nothing but sadness.

“I…” Wendy’s gaze fixed on the right side of Zora’s face. She wanted to ask if it still hurt.

Wendy’s mental state was unstable. She lost control of her emotions easily.

It was only after she’d hit Zora that she’d felt that slow, sharp regret in her heart.

She still couldn’t figure out how she felt about this daughter she’d gotten back so late.

Her feelings were all mixed up. She’d hated her, blamed her, and resented her. Deep down, she’d secretly wanted Zora to give in to her just a little.

But Zora was stubborn. She always pushed back hard instead of backing down.

Take the Jolie incident for example. She knew Jolie had framed her, but she couldn’t really talk things through with her. She only told her plainly that Jolie was behind it.

They didn’t really care about the truth. If Zora just gave in, Wendy would stand up for her.

Instead, Zora had insisted on making a big fuss just to clear her name.

With time, Wendy had thought she was just being difficult and stopped trying to fix things.

They were both too stubborn. That’s why they could never get along.

But after everything she’d been through, Wendy didn’t want to dwell on the past. She’d gotten all the punishment she deserved.

Wayne had gotten his karma too. He’d spent his whole life raising another man’s child, never knowing the truth.

Zora could tell what she was about to say and cut her off quickly.

“If you only asked me here to talk about this stuff, there’s no point in us meeting.”

Zora had only come for news about Wayne.

Leighton had been stressing over Wayne’s disappearance for a long time. Any new clue would ease his mind.

But Wendy kept beating around the bush, and Zora was running out of patience.

Leighton was waiting for her outside. He was super busy at the end of the year and barely had a day off. She didn’t want to waste his free time-she just wanted to go home with him.

“You need to be careful of Wayne.” Wendy finally got serious, staring at her with worry.

“That group of people most likely took him. Make sure Jensen assigns two bodyguards to stay with you at all times.”

After hearing her words, Zora’s brows pulled together into a deep frown.
