Chapter 388 The Truth Behind His Injury
Years of bad blood between them couldn’t be fixed easily.
No one hurt more from what happened 17 years ago than Garrett and Leighton.
“Mr. Pierce, you’re here. Your dad will be so glad to see you.”

Walter had stayed by Garrett’s side the whole time. He opened the door and smiled in surprise when he saw Leighton outside.
“Yeah.” Leighton’s face was tight, and he replied in a low voice.
“Hi, Zora,” Walter greeted her kindly too.
“Walter,” Zora said softly.
The four of them walked into the hospital room.
Garrett was still out cold. He’d gone through so much earlier that his body was totally worn out.
Standing next to the bed, everyone could clearly see how much he’d aged.
Not long ago, he’d still looked strong and energetic. But after only a short while apart, he lay there quiet and weak, his breathing shallow, his lips pale.
Leighton stared at his father. A mess of emotions stirred in his eyes.
“Zora, check him for me.”

His dad used to be so mad at him that he’d fight with him nonstop. He never thought his dad would turn this weak and end up bedridden so fast.
Zora stepped forward and placed her fingers on Garrett’s pulse.
Everyone else stood quietly and waited.
Zora pressed her lips together and frowned.
“He can only get better with slow, careful care. His heart was hurt before. He can’t get angry or stress out anymore.
“If this happens again…”
Her voice dropped off.
Garrett didn’t have many good years left.

Ten years at most.
If he got another bad shock anytime soon, no one knew what would happen.
His body was already worn down. He only looked decent because he’d taken good care of himself all these years.

He’d gotten hurt many times when he was younger. He ignored those injuries back then, but now that he was old, all those old health problems popped up, and some of them couldn’t be fixed.
They were lucky they caught his condition early this time. It would’ve been terrible if they’d waited.
“His heart was injured… what happened?”
Leighton suddenly lifted his head.
Walter, Finn and Celine all tensed up.
“Tell me. Did this happen because of me?”
One look at their faces told Leighton they were hiding something.
“Leighton…” Celine tried to change the subject.
Seeing them avoid the question, Leighton’s gaze turned cold. He held back his rising emotions.
He looked at Zora. “Zora, can you tell what kind of heart injury it is? About how long ago did it happen?”
Zora saw their awkward looks and realized she’d spoken too soon.
Leighton had no idea his dad had a heart injury.
She hesitated and glanced at Finn and Celine.
“Don’t look at them. Look at me.” Leighton’s tone was firm. “They won’t stop you. Just tell me the truth.”
He knew Zora could tell exactly what was wrong.
Finn and Celine exchanged a look and nodded at Zora.
If Leighton wanted the truth, he’d find it out sooner or later.
Feeling their approval, Zora felt more relaxed.

“It’s a gunshot wound. The bullet almost hit his heart dead center. It happened about 17 years ago.”
Zora could tell clearly from his body’s condition.
“Seventeen years ago…”
Leighton mumbled the words, then stared straight at Finn.
“It was because of me, right?”
Finn met his stubborn gaze and let out a long sigh.
“Leighton, do you remember waking up after they saved you? You wondered why Dad never came to see you. It’s because he was badly hurt.
“Seventeen years ago, you were trapped in a drug lord’s hideout. Dad went in alone to save you.
“Right when he was about to get you on the helicopter, a bullet flew straight for you. Dad took the bullet for you.
“That bullet hit right over his heart. It missed killing him by just a tiny bit.”
Finn spoke slowly and seriously.
Leighton heard this long-hidden truth out of nowhere.
The huge wall between him and his father suddenly cracked open.
For the first time, he saw the deep, quiet love his dad had always hidden from him.
His eyelashes trembled.
“All of you go rest. I’ll stay here and watch over him.”
Leighton looked at his unconscious father, at the oxygen mask on his face, and listened to the steady beep of the hospital machines.
It finally sunk in-his dad was really old.
His throat felt tight.
This wasn’t the dad from his childhood anymore. The man who used to chase him around with a stick, yelling and pretending to be mad in front of Vienne, threatening to discipline him.
He was old now. He didn’t have the strength to chase him anymore.
He’d taken off his usual loose coat. In the thin hospital gown, his thin, frail body was obvious.

Leighton finally noticed how much weight his dad had lost without him realizing it.
The tall, strong, unbreakable man in his memories was slowly growing old and weak.
