Chapter 49 Family Chaos on First School Day
“Alright,” Leighton-replied carnestly once again.

“From now on, come to these two guys whenever you need anything. They’re my closest friends. When I’m not around, you can always trust them.”
Night had fallen outside. Jensen and Zora rode back home in the car
Jensen glanced sideways at the girl beside him, his sharp features softening into a gentle smile.
“Okay.” Zora was far from ungrateful. She knew Jensen was helping her build reliable connections, and she would never turn down his kindness.
“If you’re sleepy, lean on me and rest. I’ll wake you when we get home.”
Worn out from the day’s chaos, Zora yawned quietly.
Jensen shifted closer, silently letting her rest her head on his shoulder.
“Thank you. I’m not tired yet.” Zora gave him a soft smile.
Before long, though, Jensen looked over to find her fast asleep against the car window. He shook his head with a helpless smile, gently guiding her head to rest on his shoulder instead.
Watching her peaceful sleeping face, he draped his coat lightly over her shoulders.
When Zora woke the next morning, she rubbed her messy bedhead, unable to remember a thing about getting home the night before.
She’d slept straight through till dawn. Sitting up slowly, she still looked half-asleep and dazed.
“Zora, are you up yet? It’s time to head to school for registration today.”
Opal knocked softly on the bedroom door, her voice warm and kindly.
“Grandma… I’m awake. I’ll be right down.”

Zora blinked slowly, her foggy mind gradually clearing. She patted her chubby cheeks with both hands, her expression falling into a small pout.
School was starting again.
Her little happiness was gone.
Zora never liked school-she’d always been a poor student. Her mentor had once said she simply had no natural talent for studying.

Annoyed as she felt, she still dragged herself to wash up and get dressed.

Her mood lifted a little when she spotted her pink teddy bear backpack, the one Jensen had bought for her the day before.
When Zora walked downstairs, the house was filled with noisy commotion.
“Grandma, stop! Please don’t hit me! If Zora sees you like this; she won’t even recognize you!”
Down in the living room, Reed clutched his head and darted around to dodge the feather duster in Opal’s
hand.
Knowing his grandmother wouldn’t let him off easy, Reed quickly brought up the cousin he’d never even
met.
He’d heard Jensen and Kian say their grandma doted on her endlessly. Maybe invoking her name would work.
If it did, he’d slip her a special treat after dinner.
“Hmph, look at that ridiculous hair of yours! If Zora sees it and gets led astray, I’ll have every reason to tan you good!”
Opal stared sharply at Reed’s platinum-blonde dyed hair, the garish color hurting her eyes.
Nearly seventy years old, she was still spry and energetic, chasing her grandson all around the living room with the feather duster without even breaking a breath.
“You brat! That hair’s an eyesore. Get it dyed back to normal today, or don’t even think about setting foot in this house! I won’t let you set a bad example for Zora.”
At the mention of Zora, Opal glanced toward the staircase, worried the little girl might catch sight of her flustered, chasing-after-grandson look. She didn’t want Zora thinking she wasn’t a gentle grandmother.
Reed was darting around the sofa when he spotted Zora coming down the stairs. He immediately yelled out loud, “Zora! Help! Grandma’s gonna spank me! Save me!”
“Don’t think you can fool me.” Opal raised the feather duster, ready to go after him again.
“Grandma.”
The familiar voice made Opal’s feather duster slip right out of her hand and clatter to the floor.
She quickly set aside the duster, smoothing down her messy hair in a hurry.
“Zora, you’re awake. Paul, fix her breakfast at once.”
Opal switched into her warm, gentle grandmotherly demeanor in an instant.
Zora walked down the stairs step by step, confused by the chaotic scene below.
The handsome young man downstairs had two stray feathers stuck in his hair, looking utterly silly.

Zora, save me! Grandma’s being totally unfair!”

Reed’s face lit up the second he saw Zora. He couldn’t help thinking how pretty and adorable his new
cousin was.
He’d already taken a liking to her at first sight. Leaping lightly over the stair railing, he landed right behind her to complain.
“Really, Reed? Have you no shame?” Opal shot him an exasperated glare as he hid behind Zora.
“Zora, don’t listen to his nonsense. Just look at his hair—it’s getting more outrageous every year. It was gray last winter, and now this weird pale gold mess this summer. It looks absolutely terrible.”
Opal turned back to Zora with a soft, kind smile again.
‘Grandma, you just don’t know how to appreciate style.”
