Chapter 50 A Warm First Meeting With Reed

Reed stood his ground arguing, hiding safely behind Zora and no longer afraid of the feather duster.
“Zora, don’t you think my hair looks cool?”
Reed leaned close to Zora, running a hand through his pale blonde locks.
“It looks nice.” Zora nodded, watching his hair glow softly in the sunlight.
The young man had a bold, striking look with sharp, handsome features. Dressed in a plain black T-shirt, his pale blonde hair shimmered brightly.
His eyes held a wild, carefree spark, radiating youthful energy.
No wonder Opal had mentioned this youngest grandson with a mix of exasperation and amusement.
‘See? Grandma? Zora thinks my hair looks great!”
Proud of her compliment, Reed flashed a triumphant grin at Opal. If Zora said it looked good, that settled
‘Enough of your bickering. Hurry and have breakfast, or you’ll be late for school registration.” Opal waved them toward the dining table. “Jensen will drive you soon. He’s upstairs handling some business, and he’ll be ready once you’re done eating.”
Zora and Reed sat side by side at the table.
Reed had flown back early that morning without a chance to grab breakfast, while Zora had simply slept in
too late.
Luckily, registration day at Havenridge High didn’t start until eight o’clock.
‘Hey Zora, I’m Reed.”
As they sat eating, Reed watched Zora nibble quietly at her food, his heart warming instantly,
Jensen had told them Zora was now part of their family, and she was every bit as adorable as he’d imagined.
He’d never cared for Jolie’s type-always acting fragile, claiming she was full after just two bites, speaking in a sickly sweet tone that grated on the nerves.
“Have more of these croissants, they’re really good.”
Reed tried one of the croissants and thought it tasted great, so he put one on her plate.
“Thank you, Reed.”
Zora didn’t refuse, picking up the croissant and taking a bite. Buttery, flaky layers melted on her tongue, with a sweet, creamy oozing filling that tasted absolutely wonderful.

It was the first time Zora had ever met Reed. Still, as she glanced over at him watching her every move while he ate, she could tell he probably didn’t dislike her.
“You’re so cute,” Reed chuckled sheepishly. “I rushed back last minute and didn’t get you a gift. I’ll make it up to you next time.”
He’d been out exploring in the woods the day before, where cell service was spotty. Once he realized school was starting soon, he’d packed in a hurry and headed straight home.
It wasn’t until he reached the city and checked his phone that he’d heard the news about gaining a new
cousin.
By then, he was already on his way to the airport, with no time to shop for a present.
Truth be told, Reed had felt uneasy at first. He’d worried their new cousin would be just like Jolie-timid, teary, and high-maintenance. The thought alone had given him a headache.
Before meeting her, he’d even been a little reluctant to welcome Zora into the family, fearing she’d be nothing but trouble.
Now that he saw her, though, he thought she was utterly precious. Her cheeks looked soft and squishy, and he couldn’t help wondering if they’d feel bouncy like a sweet treat if he poked them.
Reed stared at Zora, completely lost in thought.
‘Aren’t you going to eat?” Zora turned to look at him. He held a cruller but hadn’t taken a single bite.
‘I-I’m eating! Right now!”
Reed snapped out of his daze and stuffed the whole/cruller into his mouth.
He immediately started coughing.
‘Drink some milk.” Zora handed him the glass beside her plate.
Reed took it and drank it all in one gulp.
Thanks, Zora… I’m fine now,” he panted, patting his chest and coughing a few more times to clear his
throat.
“You should eat more slowly. Rushing makes you choke, and it can be really dangerous if it gets bad,” Zora said earnestly, lecturing him in all seriousness.
“I know, I know. I’ll be careful next time.” Reed sat up straight, listening obediently to her scolding.
He’d simply been too busy staring at her to pay attention to what he was eating.
From the living room sofa, Opal watched the two getting along so well, a soft smile spreading across her face as the fine lines around her eyes crinkled gently.
She’d always known Zora was the kind of girl everyone would grow fond of. Only the Knox family had been foolish enough to take her for granted-and they would surely regret it someday.

“Zora, this is a back-to-school gift from Kian,” Opal said, walking over with a pink gift bag and handing it to her. “He’s tied up at his lab lately and couldn’t make it back to see you off. He feels terrible about missing
it.”
Kian had originally planned to come home and send Zora to school himself, but unexpected work at his lab had kept him away.
