After Jensen left the night before, Zora found herself lying awake, unable to sleep-something rare for her.
Her mind raced with endless thoughts, and she could not tell when she finally drifted off. Only one thought lingered firmly in her head-she would cut all emotional ties with the Knox family for good.
From now on, she would no longer let anything about them trouble or sadden her.
They no longer mattered to her at all.
When she got up early that morning, Zora noticed the dark circles under her eyes, which left Opal and the others quite worried.
“Zora, did you finish your schoolwork?”
Staying up late was pretty normal for teenagers these days, so no one suspected anything unusual. Easton quickly changed the subject and chatted casually.
“…Not yet.”
At the mention of homework, Zora’s expression fell, weariness settling over her face.
She pulled her workbook out of her backpack, barely filled with any answers.
She had finished all her literature assignments, but she had not even touched math or physics. Those subjects were completely beyond her.
“Do I really have to do all this homework?”

Zora rested her chin in her hands, staring blankly at the empty pages, utterly confused.
Why could everyone else work out the problems while she could not?
Her mind was totally blank.
“You can copy mine if you want,” Easton said, holding out his workbook to her.
“My answers are just average, definitely not as accurate as Maya’s. If you get stuck on anything, asking Maya is the way to go. But her grades are way too perfect-teachers would definitely notice if you copied her work,” he added.
“Really? Won’t the teachers get mad and yell at me?”
Zora’s eyes lit up like she had found a lifeline. She quickly took the workbook from him.

“…Don’t copy the math part. Mr. Wyatt will pull you straight to the office if he finds out. For the other subjects, you can copy a little if you’re running out of time.
“Our teachers are actually quite open-minded; they won’t scold anyone.”
Easton paused to think for a moment, answering her carefully.
The teachers at their class did not enforce rules too strictly, and since they were seniors, everyone was mostly expected to be self-disciplined.
It was common for many girls to struggle with science subjects.
Their teachers were understanding too. Regardless of copying, as long as students kept a proper attitude toward studying, it was the teachers’ job to get them to understand the material.
Every teacher at Havenridge High was handpicked, selected from thousands of applicants with top-tier teaching skills.
Easton could not stand seeing Zora looking so dejected.
“Mm.”
Hearing she still had to work things out on her own, Zora’s good mood faded away again.
Homework really is such a hassle. Why does school even have homework in the first place?
“Maybe I’d better not copy it then.”
Zora nodded hesitantly, thinking about what Easton had said about the teachers not getting
upset.
She’d filled in every answer she knew. As for the ones she didn’t, she could never figure them out no matter how hard she racked her brain. Even if she copied the answers, she would not understand them anyway.
She would still be lost when similar problems showed up later.
Besides, Zora had another quiet plan in mind.
If she made it obvious from the start that she was not bright, the teachers would not hold high expectations for her.
Then she could comfortably stay average without pressure.
The more she thought about it, the smarter her plan seemed.
She was already letting everyone get used to the idea-she really was not good at schoolwork at
all.

“If you run into problems you can’t solve, just ask Maya. She’s top of the class, aces every subject. She’ll explain it till you get it for sure.”
Easton nodded toward the quiet, reserved Maya sitting nearby.

Zora turned to look at Maya.
She had never realized Maya was so low-key and unassuming.
To be perfect in every subject, how incredibly smart must she be?
What a sharp mind she must have.
Feeling Zora’s gaze, Maya turned her head slightly and met her eyes.
“I… I can help you with anything you don’t understand,” she said softly, her voice quiet and gentle.
“Mm.”
Zora nodded, then turned back to struggle with her homework again.
She should try a little harder on her own first.
She could not rely on others forever.
Yet her high spirits crumbled the second she laid eyes on the first math problem.
What even was a complex number?
Why bother struggling on her own when there was a genius right beside her? She might as well lean on Maya for help.
Looking utterly lost, Zora turned around and gently poked Maya’s arm with her slender finger.
“Hey, what’s a complex number even supposed to be?”
“…I’m so tired. Can I just skip studying this?”
Maya explained the concept step by step for a long time, walking Zora through the example problem slowly. Zora followed along half-confused, finally managing to wrap her head around the question.
She had only finished one single problem, yet it felt like it drained all her energy, leaving her completely worn out.

Holding a pink strawberry-themed pen in her hand, she rested her face flat on the desk. tapping the surface absently with her fingers.
“Here.”
Maya glanced at the glum girl beside her, pulled a sealed insulated foil box out of her desk drawer, and slid it over to Zora.
The moment the box opened, a rich, tempting creamy scent filled the air.
“Egg tarts,” Maya said, lifting the lid to reveal golden, freshly baked pastries inside.
“Are these for me?” Zora sat up a little straighter, a faint spark of light returning to her dull eyes.
