They smelled incredibly good, absolutely mouthwatering.

Ever since leaving the Knox Villa, Zora had realized there were so many delicious treats out in the world-not just the plain food served at the Knox household.

“I hope you like it,” Maya said with a soft nod.

“Thanks, Maya.” Zora’s voice was sweet and light.

Her face lit up the second she realized the pastries were all for her. She quickly picked a salted caramel egg tart. Its buttery, flaky crust looked utterly tempting.

“Maya, did you bake more goodies again?”

Easton and the others in the front row caught the sweet aroma and turned around, spotting Zora munching happily away.

They glanced at the foil box and saw an array of egg tarts: salted caramel, vanilla bean, dark chocolate, cinnamon, and cream cheese flavors.

There were only six in total, each one beautifully crafted and delicate.

Maya was not only a top student but also an amazing baker, skilled enough to rival professional pastry chefs.

Everyone in class still raved about the last time she’d brought homemade treats.

“I’ll make some more for all of you next time,” Maya replied with a quiet nod.

After a full day of classes, Zora headed home feeling worn out and distracted. Still, school had its small joys-plenty of tasty snacks, treats from Maya, and kind teachers who never scolded her even when she left homework unfinished.

On her way back, Zora ran into another member of the Knox family.

This time, it was Holden.

“Zora.”

Zora had nearly reached the grounds of the Marlow Manor when she spotted a figure in the distance.

It was Holden.

Dirt stained the white sneakers on his feet, his hair messy and unkempt, leaving him looking rather disheveled.

Could the Knox family just leave her alone already?

Opal had gone shopping with her friends that afternoon, and Floyd had headed out to fish with an old buddy. The manor was empty except for Zora herself.

Zora had come home early to prepare some herbal blends, choosing not to wait for Reed.

She never expected to run straight into Holden the moment she arrived.

Pulling out her phone, Zora planned to message Hallie and ask if she had left yet.

Before she could send the text, Holden walked over to her.

“Zora.”

“What do you want?” Zora’s tone was flat and indifferent.

“This is for you. An apology for last time.”

Holden pulled a small box from his bag and held it out to her.

“I don’t want anything from you.”

Zora didn’t even glance at the box, her tone firm.

“…Zora, we’re siblings. This is for you, and you’re going to take it,”

Holden had slowly figured out Zora’s personality. She spoke her mind without filtering her words, never worrying about hurting anyone’s feelings.

She was nothing like Jolie, who would light up with gratitude and gush about how wonderful her brother was whenever given a gift.

Zora was nothing like that. She wouldn’t fake thanks and would outright turn down anything he offered.

After growing used to Zora’s blunt honesty, Holden no longer let her words sting.

Ignoring her refusal, he grabbed her hand and pressed the box firmly into her palm.

Zora tried to push it back.

“I said I don’t want it.”

He was so annoying. She’d already turned him down clearly, yet he kept forcing the gift on her.

If anything, he seemed even more exasperating than before.

“I don’t take back what I’ve given someone,” Holden insisted, refusing to back down.

“You’re so annoying! We don’t have any ties anymore.”

Caught in a back-and-forth and unable to get on with her plans, Zora flared up in rage and threw the box at him.

The box clattered to the ground, revealing a pink crystal butterfly hair clip inside.

One corner of the butterfly’s wing cracked upon impact with the pavement.

The sharp corner of the box had hit Holden, causing a dull ache, followed by a slight pang in his heart.

He stared down at the fallen item, his gaze fixed on the crack in the butterfly wing. His lips pressed into a tight line, lost in quiet thought.

He knelt down and picked the hair clip up.

“You accept gifts from your cousins. Why won’t you take anything from me?”

There was a quiet loneliness in Holden’s voice.

“I don’t take things from people I dislike. You never cared for me, and I don’t care for you either,” Zora said plainly, completely serious.

Holden’s expression darkened at her blunt rejection.

She made no effort to hide that she wanted nothing to do with them.

“If you don’t like this one, I’ll buy you something else next time.”

Holden shut the box tight, his knuckles white as he gripped the bottom. He chose to ignore her words about disliking him.

He couldn’t explain why he kept coming to find Zora, even when she never gave him a kind

look.

It was just that the Knox Villa felt hollow and off without her presence there anymore.

He had to admit he missed having Zora at home.

So, he wanted Zora to come back.

She was still upset with their family, but he would keep coming again and again. Sooner or
