Chapter 5
While I was still in the hospital, I had already started calling the best maternity nurse agencies. It was a dead
end. Every nurse I wanted was still serving their current clients.
Walking out of the hospital, clutching my son, I felt completely, terrifyingly alone.
This was their plan, of course. Nathan and his parents figured they could isolate me, leave me helpless, and
force me to crawl back.
They seriously underestimated me.
If the professional agencies were a bust, I would find my own help.
I got on my phone and posted a job ad across all the local university job boards and student forums.
I was specific: I needed a student with infant care experience, patience, and a flexible schedule.
University students are generally earnest, responsible, and looking to help. It was the best possible solution I
had.
I got several calls within half an hour.
I screened them quickly and met the most promising one.
Her name was Mia Lane. She was a junior in the education program, and her resume said she had spent an
entire summer caring for her sister’s newborn twins.
The second I met her, I knew. Her eyes were bright, and she was articulate.
When she saw my son fussing, her voice instantly softened.
“He is still having a rough time, is he not? Here, let me get your bag.”
That was it. She was the one.
I hired her on the spot. We agreed on a fair salary for helping with the baby and light housework, just so I
could finally breathe.
I was literally about to take Mia back to my place to pack when my real estate agent called.
“Ella? The buyer is ready. All cash. Can you come in to sign… today?”
“Yes.”
I was not surprised it was moving this fast.
That apartment-my wedding gift-is in Crestview, a luxury building in the city’s absolute best school district.
It has always been what agents call a hot property, the kind of scarce listing that families fight over.

As long as the owner is serious, a place like that sells itself overnight.
I had kept it because it was practical. It was close to Nathan’s office, an easy commute for him, and a guaranteed spot in a top school for our son.
Now? I could not care less about his commute.
My son will get into a great school, with or without that specific apartment.
The closing was incredibly fast. Mia was a lifesaver and ran all the documents back and forth so I would not have to. I just had to sign.
The very next day, I hired movers. I took Mia and my son, and we drove to my parents’ house on the west side of the city.
It is quiet there. It is the house I grew up in, and it was the only safe, warm place I could think of.
I had barely settled in when my phone rang.
I saw it was my mom. I had to take a deep breath, just to keep my voice steady.
“Mom…”
“Ella! We are here! We just landed, we are just getting our bags.”
“How are you, sweetie? How is the recovery? Is the incision healing?”
“Is Sophie… feeding you alright? You have to tell me if her food is terrible, I will cook for you!”
I could hear my dad in the background.
“Let her rest! Stop grilling her, we will see her in an hour…”
These are the people who actually love me. Every word was about my well-being, my comfort.
They were not just demanding to know if I had enough milk or if the baby was behaving.
The sudden, sharp relief of it all… it just hit me. My eyes blurred instantly.
