Chapter 6
I bit my lip, hard, trying to stop the sob, but it broke through anyway.
“Mom, Dad, I’m at the villa on the west side…”
“Ella? What is wrong?” My mother’s voice instantly sharpened with panic.
“Why are you at the villa? It has not even been opened up! Are you alone? Did Nathan do something to you?”
“I knew something was wrong when you said that retreat was canceled. I did not want to push you.”
“You sounded so weak on the phone, and we were trapped by that blizzard. All flights canceled. We have
been half-mad with worry!”
I remembered that call. She had received the refund text and called, only to find out I had already delivered.
I was so exhausted then, still clinging to the pathetic hope that Nathan would fix it.
And I didn’t want to worry my parents, so I made up an excuse, saying the postpartum care center had some
recent disputes.
They were supposed to be here two weeks before my due date, but the blizzard trapped them until today.
I scrubbed the tears from my face. “Just come home. It is okay. Drive safe. I am waiting for you.”
After I told them everything, my mother was just weeping, clutching my hand.
My father’s face was dark with rage. He slammed his hand on the arm of the sofa.
“That bastard. The whole rotten family.”
“I knew it. I knew he was no good from the start.”
“This is my fault. I thought… I thought as long as he treated you well… I never imagined they would dare to
hurt my daughter like this.”
My mom just pulled me into her arms. “You are done. You are divorcing him.”
“We can raise this baby, Ella. You are not spending one more day with those people.”
Once their anger faded, they just looked at me, heartbroken that I had been running around instead of
recovering.
My parents travel constantly, so the villa is not fully staffed.
They knew Mia, a student, was not enough, so they immediately made calls and hired two nutritionists.
That night, in my childhood bed, with my mom and Mia watching the baby, I finally slept. A deep, real sleep.
This is what it means to have family at your back.
They did not ask why I sold the apartment. They did not tell me to endure it for the child.
They just immediately started building a fortress around me.
Soon, the nutritionists were making perfect, healing meals.
Mia was a natural with the baby, and my anxiety and exhaustion just melted.
With my parents’ care, my body finally started to recover. My heart, too.
But that kind of peace never lasts.
Late one night, Nathan called.
I checked the time. Their little family vacation must be over.
So, he finally remembered he had a wife and a sick son.
I let it ring five times before I calmly answered.
“Ella? Where are you? We are at Crestview, but you are not here.”
“We came back early, we were worried. The lock is changed. What is going on? You need to come back and
let us in.”
He sounded frantic, almost panicked. And in the background, I could hear Sophie, banging on the door.
“She did this on purpose! I know she did! She locked us out!”
“Ella! We know you are in there! Open this door right now!”
