The Rejected Principessa Returns novel Chapter 74

Chapter 8

I just stared at her, unimpressed.

“Oh? Is that what the police told you last night, when you were at the station?”

Sophie just gritted her teeth, glaring at me.

I already knew, of course. The police had called me this morning.

They had refused to believe the Crestview apartment was sold and tried to break in.

The new owner-a martial arts instructor, incidentally-mistook them for burglars, and the whole mess ended at the police station.

When the police called me, I just said I was recovering from childbirth and unavailable.

Nathan finally looked up, his lip trembling.

“Ella, I… I know I was wrong. It was my fault. I never should have left you, I… I just wasn’t in my right mind, we

can…”

“Not in your right mind?”

Looking at this spineless man, the last flicker of feeling I had for him died.

“You were in your right mind, Nathan. You were selfish. And you are a coward.”

“You only care about your parents. You never, ever, saw me as your family.”

I pushed the document through the bars of the gate.

“Sign it.”

When he read the words “Divorce Agreement,” he recoiled, all the color draining from his face.

“No… Ella, you cannot… we cannot! The baby… he is just a baby!”

“The baby stays with me.”

His voice was shaking, laced with a panic I had never heard before.

“I was wrong! I swear, I know I was wrong! I will do whatever you want, I will send them home right now!

Please, just… do not do this!”

He was clinging to the gate, his knuckles white, his eyes just begging.

It was too late.

Too late for all the times he let his parents humiliate me.

Too late for the moment he chose them and hung up that phone.

Too late for the “lesson” he thought would break me. It was all done.

“Let’s do this quietly, Nathan. Or I can make it very, very public. Starting with your office.”

“You worked so hard for that job. It would be a shame to lose it all now, would it not?”

I knew he would miss the convenience of our marriage, but I knew he feared losing his precious, hard-won

career even more.

He knew better than anyone what would happen if this got out.

A scandal about abandoning his wife and sick child? Right when he was up for promotion? His’ career would be crippled, if not completely over.

I did not press the issue.

“Think about it. But not for long.”

I knew a man like Nathan-weak-willed and obsessed with his public image-would not sign easily.

He would stall, hoping it would all just go away.

But I had no intention of pushing him into a corner. I know that a man with nothing left to lose is a

dangerous man.

If I pushed him too hard, there is no telling what he might do.

I have my son, and my parents. I had too much to lose.

So I held back on reporting his fraudulent paternity leave. Instead, I just quietly gathered the materials to file

legally.

But even when I tried to lay low, trouble found me.

I was finally out of my recovery period. I was in a good mood, getting ready to go to the mall with Mia to buy

some new things for the baby.

We had just left the gates of our neighborhood when Sophie burst out of the bushes.

“Ella! You bitch! You are vicious!”

“It was not enough to make us homeless? You had to ruin my son’s career!”

“He is suspended! Are you happy now? Did you go to his office? Did you do this? You… You poisonous, evil

witch!”

I froze, stunned by her words. And then I realized what must have happened.
