Her own daughter had suffered for years in that cold orphanage, never full, never smiling. Today, she finally wanted to make it up to her. It was Brie’s birthday, and her classmates would all be there. The three sisters could laugh together and enjoy the night. The thought alone warmed Geneva’s heart.

But Geneva didn’t know the truth. Brie and Danica never invited Cassia. Cassia, thrilled to be left alone, stayed in her room with her controller in hand and ignored the noise downstairs. She didn’t care to play nice.

The bond between the three sisters kept slipping further apart.

Downstairs at the Woods‘ mansion, Brie stood in the foyer in a fresh white dress with delicate fringe that swayed when she moved. Her hair was twisted up neatly, a crystal pin sparkling beneath the chandelier. The bracelet on her wrist, a Seer design, gleamed against her skin, making her look like a princess in a modern fairy tale.

But the bracelet wasn’t hers. Danica had loaned it to her. Since Brie never said a word and Danica kept quiet too, everyone assumed Vance had spoiled them both–one bracelet for his biological daughter and another one for his adopted one.

Vance knew better. A Seer bracelet cost a small fortune. Brie was only his foster child. He’d never buy something like that for her.

He lounged in an armchair, swirling red wine in his glass as his eyes followed Brie’s radiant smile.

At least she looked happy. She really did save him a lot of stress.

Most of her classmates had already arrived. Brie stood in the middle of the room like the main act at a gala, basking in attention as compliments and birthday wishes poured over her like confetti.

Across town, in another part of the city, Seven knocked once before stepping into the study.

“Mr. Grey, still reading?” His tone carried a hint of amusement. “I’ve got something to tell you.”

“Did you

find C?” Draven didn’t look up. His eyes stayed fixed on the screen, where an international racing replay flickered across the monitor.

“Not C. That one’s completely disappeared. There’s no lead at all.”

Even if I wanted to dig deeper, there’s nowhere to start. Seven kept that thought in his head.

He cleared his throat. “Mr. Grey, I just heard that the Woods is throwing a birthday bash for their adopted daughter.”

Draven didn’t even twitch. He stayed glued to the screen.

The news did not interest him at all.

His favorite racer was in that competition.

The event had taken place back in March. He’d missed it live, but the official replay came out by December. Since he couldn’t catch it on TV, he’d paid for the recording. Now he could watch it whenever he pleased.

Seven wasn’t surprised. He pressed on. “Mr. Grey, I haven’t found C yet. But I did find out that the girl you like–Cassia–is the Woods‘ oldest daughter.”

“Hm?”

Draven’s brow lifted slightly.

Finally, something got to him.

Cassia really was remarkable. She didn’t even have to be there to stir his mood.

The gift table downstairs was overflowing. Boxes and ribbons spilled over the edge.

Danica stood there, half proud and half jealous. “You’re really the favorite, Brie. When it’s my birthday, Dad only gets me one bracelet. I’ve never had this many gifts in my life. But I guess no present means more to you than Kaleb’s heart, right?”

She smirked to herself. Next year, I’ll throw something bigger. Brighter. I’ll make sure everyone brings me even more gifts than this.

Brie gave her a graceful smile. “Danica, don’t say that. If someone overhears you, it’ll sound bad.”

Kaleb still hadn’t confessed. Her feelings for him stayed one–sided. With this many guests, rumors could spread like wildfire.

But Danica took it the wrong way.
