“You can read a person from their play,” Henry pressed. “That girl wouldn’t come after you over something that small. Think again–what else happened after that?”
Randy replayed what had just happened, turning it over and over, but still couldn’t find the thread.
“Enough. Stop forcing it,” Henry said, waving him off. “That kid Aspen–go play a game with him. If he’s decent, bring him in. I’ll test him myself.” As he spoke, he began reconstructing the first game he’d played with Cassia, setting the position back on the board to review it.
Draven knocked and entered. Seeing him, Henry beckoned. “Come, come–let’s analyze the game together.”
Outside, Randy and Aspen found a small pavilion and sat down.
Brie and Danica returned to Aspen’s side, and they saw Cassia approaching.
Danica quickly called out, “Cassia, Aspen’s playing–aren’t you going to come watch? Even if you’ve never learned chess and don’t understand a thing, watching could still do you some good.”
“Exactly,” Brie added. “Chess cultivates character Maybe if Cassia learns, she’ll improve her refinement–and even her manners.”
Danica and Brie spoke loudly enough to draw plenty of attention from the people nearby.
Most of the guests attending Henry’s chess gathering had real strength in the game.
Never learned chess? Then, why was she here?
Randy and Aspen had already decided who moved first, and Aspen–playing White–had already placed his opening move.
Strangely, the other side still hadn’t responded.
Aspen looked up and saw Randy staring in Cassia’s direction.
Thinking Cassia was distracting Randy, Aspen said, “My eldest younger sister has a strange temperament–abrasive and arrogant. Even our family can’t get along with her. Please don’t take it to heart.”
Randy pulled his gaze back, eyes lowered, his tone noticeably colder. “Mr. Wood, she’s still your sister. Isn’t it wrong to talk about her like that?”

And Danica and Brie were practically broadcasting it–like they wanted everyone to hear that Cassia not only couldn’t play, but lacked character too.
If he had siblings like that, it would freeze his heart.
Wait-
Randy suddenly thought of something, his eyes sweeping over Aspen, Cassia, Danica, and Brie.
Did he actually offend Cassia?
“Mr. Wood, can I ask a personal question?”
“Go ahead, Randy.”
“It looks like you don’t get along with your eldes younger sister?”
“I already said it–her personality is difficult. No just us–she can’t even get along with her own father or grandmother. Probably because she grew up in some backwater town.”
The more Randy listened, the clearer his judgment became.
So, earlier at the manor gate, his polite small talk with Aspen had rubbed her the wrong way?
Aspen had gone too far. Since they were all sisters, he should have either left them all outside or taken one to stay with Cassia.
Instead, he didn’t even ask. He decided on his own to leave Cassia outside while bringing Danica and Brie in with him.
That was blatant favoritism.
The kind that chills you to the bone.
“Cassia, if you don’t want to watch, I can play a teaching game with you,” Brie said.
“Brie’s chess is better than mine. If she’s willing to teach you, that’s your honor,” Danica chimed in. “We’re bored anyway–might as well help you improve your refinement.” They kept hovering around Cassia, desperate to be noticed.
Randy’s face tightened.
Cassia had just wiped the board with him–ruthless, surgical. And these two amateur–level players wanted to “teach” her?
Brie and Danica buzzed in her ear like flies. Cassa finally got fed up.

“With your level? Even in a hundred years, you still wouldn’t be qualified to play me a teaching game.”
