Looking at Cassia tonight, Kaleb felt a wave of regret.

It wasn’t just because she looked absolutely stunning. She’d also just won the city volleyball championship last month.
She wasn’t someone who couldn’t be presented in public at all—she simply chose not to.
If he could actually be with her, he wouldn’t mind spending time encouraging her and helping her improve.
Cassia liked him enough that he figured it wouldn’t be hard for her to change for him.
But-
Byron kept hovering near her, trying to get her attention.
“Cassia, I didn’t expect you to look this amazing once you dressed up. I barely recognized you. I think girls should dress up a little. If you were like this more often, it would be great.”
Watching that, Kaleb frowned deeply.
Byron was his friend. First, Byron had stepped aside when it came to Brie, and now it was Cassia.
Not long ago, Byron had openly said he wanted to pursue Cassia. If Kaleb jumped in now, that would make him a terrible friend.
Besides, he was currently dating Brie. Choosing Cassia now would be a huge problem. Would Brie be upset? Maybe even tattle on him to the teachers?
Kaleb thought Brie was kind enough not to do that.
While Kaleb was lost in his messy thoughts, Byron was still chattering nonstop beside Cassia.
“Stay away from me. You’re annoying,” she said coolly to him, who was talking endlessly.
By now, Byron was already used to Cassia’s blunt attitude.
She was different from other girls, and that was exactly what made her interesting. He had even discovered that he kind of liked it when she snapped at him.
Her sharp words were thrilling, like a whip cracking against him.

Besides, chasing a girl was about the challenge. Girls who would jump to him at the slightest beckoning were boring.
Girls like Cassia were a real challenge.
Cassia turned to Sterling.
She was only here for him. No one else mattered.
Ever since they entered, Sterling had lowered his head and stayed quietly behind her.
Despite the crowded banquet hall, he showed no fear or anxiety, just occasionally moving a little closer to her.
“Cassia, how did you get in? Don’t you need an invitation?” Brie’s fake–sweet voice cut through Cassia’s thoughts.
“What does that have to.do with you?” Cassia snapped, walking toward a less crowded area.
Seeing her leave, Sterling hurried after her.
Brie’s cheeks burned with anger. But with such a formal occasion and Kaleb right beside her, she didn’t dare lash out.
Ethan had also come with Gary and Fiona. In the crowd, he spotted Cassia in red first.
“Cassia!” Ethan was thrilled. Just as he was about to tell his mother he was stepping away, he saw Sterling beside Cassia.
“Mom, I think I see Sterling…”
“What?” Fiona, who had been chatting animatedly with a group of upper–class socialites, snapped her head around in the direction Ethan was looking.
She saw Cassia and Sterling.
Fiona turned pale with shock. Her wine glass nearly slipped.
How could she bring him here?!
Without thinking, Fiona rushed forward, blocking Sterling.
“Sterling, why are you here? Don’t you know how serious your condition is?” she snapped.
Cassia turned at the voice.

Sterling looked anxiously toward Cassia ahead of him. He instinctively tried to move past Fiona.
“Sterling!” Fiona grabbed his hand and yanked hard.
Fear instantly spread across Sterling’s face.
