Byron felt his heart soften a little when she cried. Still, he asked, “Then why didn’t you return the money from selling the painting to Cassia?”
Brie sobbed as she answered, “You all know about this. Cassia hates me and Danica. She wants to leave home so badly. So, I thought I couldn’t give the money back to her, because … because
boohoo…”
Kaleb saw Brie crying so hard she could barely breathe. He quickly stood up, pulled her into his arms, and comforted her softly. “Don’t cry. Whatever you say, I believe you.”
Byron looked at Brie with a complicated expression.
It turned out that tears really were powerful. A good cry was enough to make the boys soften and start believing her.
Brie took a shaky breath and kept explaining. “If I give the money back to Cassia, she’ll take it and leave home forever. She’ll start her life somewhere else. Boohoo … I don’t want Cassia to go! I don’t want to never see her again.”
Kaleb murmured, “So that’s why. You meant well.”
Byron had no words.
Even though Byron’s heart had softened, that didn’t mean his doubts were gone. After all, Brie had lied before.
There was the piano incident and the Leah incident too.
After dealing with Kaleb and Byron, Brie finally went to the hospital.
She went back to the manor and brought Victoria with her to visit Danica.
Geneva no longer dared to leave Danica alone in the room. Whenever she went to the restroom or stepped out for anything, she had to call a nurse to stay and watch Danica.
Around that time, Danica woke up.
After waking, Danica did the same as before. She stared out the window with empty eyes. Geneva came in carrying a box of strawberries Cassia had sent a few nights ago.

“The doctor said the injuries on your face mean you shouldn’t eat anything too strong or irritating.”
Danica acted as if she hadn’t heard a word. Her eyes stayed fixed on the window, dull and lifeless.
Danica still looked full and was not saying any words; Geneva let out a heavy sigh.
“I just called your sister. She should be here soon.”
When she heard the word sister, something finally flickered in Danica’s hollow eyes.
Geneva took out a box of strawberries. She didn’t dare to place them di hands like before. Instead, she set the box gently on the bedside table.
Danica’s
“Have some. You need more fluids in. It’ll help you recover faster.”
Danica slowly pulled her gaze back from the distance. She turned her head stiffly and reached for the strawberry box on the nightstand.
Just as she picked it up, a loud voice came from outside the room.
“Let go of me! I’m here to see my daughter! What gives you the right to stop me?!”
The moment Danica heard Vance’s voice, her hand jerked in shock. The strawberry box slipped from her fingers and hit the floor. The strawberries rolled out, bouncing and rolling across the ground.
“Arghhh! Arghhh!”
Danica yanked the blanket over her head, hugged her knees, and began to tremble in fear.
“Didn’t I tell him not to make such a scene?” Geneva’s face filled with irritation.
She stood up and walked out of the room. Outside, she saw a newly assigned young nurse holding back a frantic Vance.
Geneva pulled the door closed behind her, stood in front of it, and faced Vance h
-on.
“Honey! What are you doing?” Geneva snapped. “Don’t you know Danica needs peace and rest right now?”
“The nurse had no sense at all and blocked me,” Vance said, straightening his suit. “What was I supposed to do?” He shot the nurse who had stopped him a look full of contempt. “Did you hear that?” he said coldly. “I’m the patient’s mother’s husband. That makes me the patient’s real

father. Who do you think you are, stopping me?”
The young nurse, clearly new, pressed her lips together in frustration.

The moment this man arrived, he started shouting. It was obvious the patient was afraid of him.
She had already warned him, but he ignored her anyway.
This kind of behavior would only upset the patient and make her condition worse. And this was a hospital; quiet was required. As a nurse, if she didn’t stop him, who would?
“Shh!”
Geneva raised a finger to her lips and glared at Vance.
“Danica needs rest. She can’t handle any stress. You should
go
home.”
Vance frowned.
“She’s my daughter. I can’t even visit her now?”
“She’s afraid of you.”
“She’s afraid of me?” Vance snapped. “I’m her father. What does she have to be afraid of?”
“Right now, Danica only wants to see Brie,” Geneva said, anger rising in her voice. “The moment anyone else comes in, she starts shaking. She just had a nightmare and tried to jump out the window!”
Vance froze.
He froze for two reasons.
First, Geneva–who had always been gentle and easy to push around–was actually angry at him. Second, Danica’s depression was far more serious than he thought. Serious enough that she wanted to jump.
So Cassia had been right after all.
Just as Vance and Geneva stood locked in silence, a sharp voice sounded behind him.
“Is that how you act as a father?” Victoria said angrily. “That’s your daughter! If you don’t care about her, I do!”
