The traffic light stood at an angle across the street, facing the grocery store where Cassia and Randy were standing.
Aspen turned his head and saw them at once.
Why is she here? School isn’t over yet. Did she skip class again? And why is she with Randy?
They were too far away for Aspen to hear what they were saying.
But just looking at them…
Cassia was beautiful. Randy wasn’t strikingly handsome, but he looked decent, with neat features. On top of that, he was Henry’s student. Standing together like that, they actually looked like a matching pair.
Could it be-
Is Randy going after Cassia?
The thought startled Aspen. But the more he thought about it, the more possible it seemed.
Cassia might be cold by nature, but she was undeniably attractive.
At the last chess gathering, Randy had beaten Aspen badly in front of everyone, leaving him with no dignity at all.
Thinking back now, it felt likely that Randy had done it on purpose to impress Cassia.
And Henry’s strong dislike for him–maybe Randy had said something behind his back too.
A heavy, uncomfortable feeling settled in Aspen’s chest. He had to get to the bottom of this.
Soon, Cassia and Randy parted ways, heading in opposite directions.
Aspen got into his car and followed Randy.
After buying a few things at the grocery store, Randy went to Easthedge House.
Easthedge House was a well–known place in Zrario–a quiet lounge for tea, wellness, and chess. Aspen had been coming here since he was a child, back when Vance used to bring him along.
Randy walked inside.

Aspen parked nearby, got out of his car, and followed him at a distance.
When Sutton saw Randy, he walked over to greet him.
“Didn’t Mr. Sawyer come with you?”
“He’s at home studying chess,” Randy replied. “He’s hoping to win next time.”
“I don’t think that old man will ever win,” Sutton said with a laugh.
Someone Henry couldn’t beat? Who was that supposed to be? The legenda-
Aspen followed them into the chess room and hid to the side, quietly liste.

“Here,” Sutton said, placing a cup of tea in front of Randy. “Try this. See if I’ve improved.”
Randy picked up the cup and took a small sip. His eyes
lit up.
“It really is better than before.”
“Hahaha!” Sutton laughed loudly. “Ms. Wood is amazing. She only guided me for a short while, and my tea brewing jumped to a whole new level.”
Aspen was shocked.
Ms. Wood? Who are they talking about?
Aspen was a regular at Easthedge House. He knew Sutton was the owner and that Sutton’s tea skills were famous even at Zrario.
He also remembered that Brie had studied tea here for a few days before.
Someone guiding Sutton? And in tea?
That felt impossible.
“Ms. Wood came by recently?” Randy asked as he set his cup down.
“Just last week,” Sutton replied. “But she didn’t stay long. What a pity. I wanted to learn more from her.”
Hearing that, Randy gave a bitter smile. “She had been doing you a favor,” he said. “I just ran into her at the supermarket earlier. I mentioned that Mr. Sawyer wanted to invite her to play chess again. She said he should wait until he thinks he can beat the version of her that goes easy on him.”

“You really shouldn’t repeat that to Mr. Sawyer,” Sutton said quickly. “If he hears this…”
Randy and Sutton kept talking, but Aspen couldn’t hear another word.
Inside his chest, waves of shock crashed one after another, each stronger than the last.
Scenes flashed through his mind.

That day at Henry’s chess gathering. Cassia had gone up the mountain alone. At the time, Aspen had been puzzled. Cassia didn’t even play chess. Why would she go to a gathering like that?
Now he understood. That gathering hadn’t been random at all. Those pe her.

Then there was the family dinner. The game he played with his father. He should have won for sure. But after dinner, one extra move appeared on the board.
Just one move, and it completely turned the game around.
