By coincidence, Kaleb’s seat was by the window, and Cassia’s seat was in the back row by the window too, so all he had to do was turn his head to see straight into the advanced class across the way.
Kaleb was staring at Cassia!
The moment Brie realized the truth, her features twisted with jealousy.
What a jerk. We’re still dating. I’m sitting right next to him, and he’s openly staring at another girl…
Once or twice might’ve been tolerable. Does he really think I don’t care at all?
Brie tightened her grip on the pen in her hand until cracks formed along the barrel.
Meanwhile, Kaleb was completely absorbed.
At first, he had only meant to glance casually in Cassia’s direction. But once he looked, he couldn’t look away.
He used to think she was useless, so he’d felt superior, above her, dismissive.
Now, Cassia wasn’t just a top student–her talent in sports and the arts was undeniable. The PE teacher and music teacher had both sought her out multiple times.
Anyone who could become a straight–A student had to be intelligent. So over the past few weeks, he’d paid closer attention.
And just like he’d suspected, the girl was incredibly smart. She just hadn’t been willing to apply herself before.
Lately, a thought had been lingering in his mind–to break up with Brie and start dating Cassia instead.
If he, as her boyfriend, encouraged her to study harder, maybe she’d change for him. Maybe they’d get into Vego University together and become the kind of golden couple everyone envied.
During break, Brie went to the school store to buy a drink.
On the way there, she spotted Cassia and Danica in the field.
Brie quickened her pace and caught up to them.
“Danica, come home with me tonight, okay?”
“Don’t you know Grandma and the others practically want me living at Cassia’s?” Danica’s reply left Brie speechless for a moment.
“Danica, do you not see me as your sister anymore?” Brie snarled under her breath, fury boiling over.
“I already answered that this morning. I’m not repeating myself.” Danica’s voice was calm.
Seeing Danica back to normal almost irritated Brie more than when she’d been depressed.
At least back then, she hadn’t been this defiant. Though, honestly, Danica had been difficult ever since the depression started.
Brie missed the old Danica–the one who used to trail behind her like a shadow.

Now, that shadow had switched sides and happily followed Cassia around instead.
She’s being so affectionate with Cassia and even saying I’m not her sister anymore!

“I’ll ask you one last time. If you had to choose between Cassia and me, who would you pick?” Brie demanded through clenched teeth.
Danica gave her a look that clearly said, Are you stupid?
That look infuriated Brie more than any words could have.
If Danica had just said she chose Cassia outright, Brie might not have been this angry.
But that expression–it looked exactly like Cassia’s.
Obviously, after living together for less than a month, Danica picked up that attitude from her.
But how could that short time compare to nearly 18 years of growing up together?
What kind of spell did Cassia cast on her?
“Cassia, let’s go. Don’t bother with her!” Danica handed Cassia a pack of snacks she’d just bought from the school store.
Cassia glanced at the snacks Danica was offering and lifted a brow.
“Thanks.”
She reached out and took them.
Watching the obvious difference in how Danica treated her versus Cassia, Brie felt nothing but jealousy and rage.
She was furious.
Brie looked at Cassia, then at Danica. In a burst of anger, she shoved Danica hard and stuck her foot out, tripping her at the same
time.
“Ah!”
