Alfen rushed around the back of the school building. The moment he got there, he saw Kaleb grabbing Brie by the collar and throwing a punch at her.

Luckily, Alfen got there in time and blocked Kaleb’s fist. Had he arrived even a second later, Brie would have suffered severe njuries.

Teen boys didn’t always know their own strength. A few real punches and kicks could easily leave someone seriously injured.

‘What are you doing? You’re a guy. How can you hit a girl?” Alfen shouted.

He pulled Kaleb and Brie apart. Brie quickly hid behind Alfen.

Kaleb’s eyes went wide. He shot a sharp look at Brie, silently warning her not to lie.

His finger pointed at her, shaking with anger.

“Brie, stop making things up! I–I did yell at you, but not because of that!”

“Then why?” Alfen asked seriously.

“B–because she went to Mr. Bell and lied about me! I lost my guaranteed admission to Vego University because of her! She set me up, and now she’s pretending to be innocent!” Kaleb shouted.

Alfen looked back at Brie, who was still shaking behind him.

“I–I told Mr. Bell about you chasing Cassia because I wanted you to stop and focus on studying. Kaleb… how can you doubt me, just because you want to get close to Cassia?”

Kaleb almost passed out from anger.

He turned to Alfen, panicking. “Mr. Hoge! That’s not what she said earlier! She said-”

Brie’s thin shoulders curled inward. Alfen could clearly feel her body shaking. He couldn’t help feeling sorry for her. He even wanted to pull her into his arms to protect her.

“That’s enough!” Alfen said sharply. “You hit and yelled at a girl, and you still think you’re right? All I see is one boy bullying a weak girl!”

“No, Mr. Hoge, I-”

Kaleb hated this. He hated that he hadn’t recorded what Brie said earlier. He hated how fake and innocent she looked now.

For the first time, he felt what it was like to be targeted and misunderstood.

When he saw how red Kaleb’s face was, Alfen worried he might attack Brie again. He waved at the 11th graders and said to Kaleb, “Why are you still here? You still want to hit someone?”

“Brie! For what you did to me! I–I’ll make you pay for this! Just wait!!”

“Stopping campus violence is a teacher’s job,” Alfen said. Looking at Brie’s pure, pretty smile, his sense of pride as a protector felt satisfied.
