But as the minutes crawled by and Faye’s legs went numb from standing, the two inside did nothing but discuss plantation business. Not a single inappropriate move.

The plantation’s outdoor lights clicked off. The grounds plunged into darkness. Still nothing.

When Faye finally checked her phone and saw it was past 11 p.m., Richard followed the girl out of the office.

Faye dove behind the nearest shrub.

“Are you sure you don’t want to stay at my villa?” Richard asked.

“No thanks. I’m not great with crowds,” the girl replied. “I ran into a friend earlier–he arranged a place for me.”

“Fair enough. Rosalie’s friend is organizing a hike in the hills tomorrow–you could use the fresh air. I’ll have Rosalie come get you.”

“Appreciate it.”

“Be safe getting back.”

“Mm.”

A perfectly mundane, boring exchange.

But Faye had caught one crucial detail: Richard‘ daughter, Rosalie, knew this girl. And the girl had apparently been staying at the Scotts‘ villa.

Was the daughter supporting the father’s affair?

That didn’t add up at all.

She watched the girl disappear into the darkness alone, then saw Richard turn back into the office. A moment later, the light went out.

Silence. Nothing but cicadas and frogs.

“Tch. What a waste of my time.”

Faye muttered under her breath, crawled out from behind the bushes, and started walking to her dorm.

She was picking her way through the pitch–dark plantation when she heard something from one of the greenhouses.

Every nerve in Faye’s body went taut.

Was it the girl? Had the whole goodbye been an act? Maybe she’d doubled back to meet Richard after Faye left–maybe Faye was the one who’d been played

Convinced it was Cassia, Faye crept toward the greenhouse.

She pressed herself against the outer wall and slowly peeked around the corner.

Two silhouettes. Neither one matched the girl’s build.

Both were clearly men.

“Thieves? In the greenhouse?” Faye was stunned What were the night guards even doing? She cursed the security team’s incompetence under her breath.

Then, the conversation between the two thieves drifted out from the greenhouse.

Their voices were low, but the night was so still that Faye caught every syllable.

“Bro, I’m already on the inside learning their techniques. We don’t need to risk stealing actual trees. Plus, you just got out of the hospital–is your butt even healed?”

“Shh! Am I the boss here, or are you? I got you into this plantation over a year ago, and you haven’t picked up a single damn thing about how they grow their fruit! And keep your voice down, Hugo–patrol could hear us!”

Hugo?

Faye frowned.

She’d literally just heard Richard say Hugo was the prime espionage suspect, and now here she was, stumbling onto the man red–handed?

Once she’d put enough distance between them, Faye finally felt like she could breathe again.

The direct path to her dorm went right past the greenhouse, but the Hummer Plantation was laid out in a loop. She’d take the long way around.

Without realizing it, she ended up right in front of the director’s office again.

Faye stared at the closed door and swallowed.

She stepped forward and knocked.

“Mr. Scott? It’s Faye. I need to tell you something”

The office light snapped on. Richard appeared in the doorway, a blazer thrown over his shoulders.

“What is it?”

“I… I saw Hugo and Bryan sneaking around one of the greenhouses.”

“What?! Hugo and Bryan?”

Richard was instantly wide awake.

“Yes.” Faye nodded emphatically–she was absolutely certain of what she’d seen.

Richard rushed back inside, grabbed a flashlight from the shoe cabinet, and burst out the door.
