The two of them chatted as they left Cassia’s room.
The world finally went quiet.

Cassia rose from the bed, walked to the wardrobe, opened it, and took out an evening gown.
The moon–white gown was silk, soft and sleek as a baby’s skin, impossibly smooth to the touch.
It was Seer’s newest design, not yet on sale anywhere; this piece was the only limited edition in the world, and aside from its lead designer–Cassia herself–no one owned a second one.
Palming the liquid–silk fabric, Cassia thought of the dresses Brie had brought up earlier. She let out a dry little laugh, and headed for the bathroom.
Jake had already arranged her entire schedule. He was now waiting in secret behind the garden of the Woods‘ house for Cassia to slip out.
Because tonight, at the underground plaza downtown, a gemstone–gambling gala was about to begin.
He had burned a lot of favors to learn about this one.
If it were an ordinary gemstone–gambling market, Jake wouldn’t have bothered–Cassia would never waste time on scrap–so why dig?
But tonight’s haul was rumored to include rarities rarely seen, which finally stirred Cassia’s interest.
When he saw Cassia emerge from the hidden door, his eyes lit up, and he went utterly blank for a beat.
Cassia was wearing a sweeping, moon–white evening gown–one look at the material and you knew it was priceless–setting Cassia off as poised and elegant.
Stunning beyond words.
“Boss, you look gorgeous!”
With a Boss this brilliant and beautiful, the Woods still snubbed and bullied her. If Cassia

hadn’t told him to stand down, he’d have taught those blind fools a lesson long ago.
If the Woods learned who she really was, they wouldn’t sleep for a week.
“Mhm.”
Cassia saw Jake, smiled a little, nodded, lifted her skirt, and slid into the luxury car.
The car swept away.
Thirty minutes later, they arrived. Cassia stepped out.

Jake and the others went to park the car. Cassia had planned to wait for him to return so they could go in together, but Jake called suddenly–the garage was queued up. Tonight’s turnout was insane, the line of cars for parking stretched long, and it was impossible to say how long it would take to get a spot.
“All right, I’ll go in first. Find me when you’re done,” Cassia said, hung up, and walked straight into the gemstone–gambling venue.
Although the place was big, the inside was packed and messy too.
People milled everywhere, which meant the event hadn’t started yet; otherwise, the crowd would be clustered tightly instead of scattered.
Since it hadn’t begun, and since the space piqued her curiosity, Cassia decided to stroll.
This underground spot was famous in the trade. There were high volumes of more than a few treasures which had been cut from stones here–naturally, it drew a crowd. As Cassia moved through, she could barely squeeze by.
She shouldn’t have come in an evening gown. This wasn’t exactly a formal venue, and wearing it violated her low–profile rule–turning her into a focal point.
But she wanted to test the fit and finish—if there were any flaws, she needed to tweak them.
After all, she intended to have some fun at Brie’s party.
She saw all sorts people; some dressed in cheap shirts with bargain jeans, and some looked like walking billboards in head–to–toe designer–every stripe you could imagine.
With a chance to get rich in one night, everyone wanted a turn.
Wandering on, Cassia noticed two men in work uniforms pushing a cart toward the back. The cart was piled with stones of every sort–different sizes, different shapes.

She only glanced by accident, but very quickly, her gaze locked on one nondescript little stone
on the cart.
