Lewis approached Victor, the barrel of his gun still smoking. Clearly, he had taken that final shot after all. The moment Manny let go of Tessa, he hadn’t hesitated.

Victor pulled Tessa tightly against his chest, murmuring constant reassurances. “Don’t be afraid. It’s over. You’re safe now.”

He had never been the type to comfort others. But seeing Tessa so shaken, his own chest felt tight with anxiety.

Tessa burrowed into Victor’s arms, silent. She was clearly traumatized by that final, grisly scene.

Victor wrapped his coat around her, sealing her into a space where even the air she breathed felt protected.

“Let’s get out of here first,” Lewis urged.

Even though Manny’s men had fled, they were in the middle of nowhere. Who knew what other dangers were lurking?

Victor nodded, scooped Tessa up, and headed for the car.

Tessa remained unnaturally quiet in his arms, not moving an inch. Once inside, Victor pulled her onto his lap and pressed her against him.

This little creature was truly something. Or had they all just vastly underestimated her? To be able to enjoy a barbecue while being held hostage by Manny… was there anything she couldn’t do?
