Chapter 1022 A Narrow Escape
Victor: “The car is right outside.”
As he spoke, he tossed a set of keys directly toward Manny.

Theo, standing behind Manny, was quick to react. He lunged forward and snatched the keys out of the air.
“Sir.”
He looked at Manny with a sense of urgency.
In truth, when they staged this whole move, Manny knew the odds were against them. He originally hadn’t intended to let Tessa go…
But after seeing her, and specifically after hearing her analysis, he finally understood that he never truly stood a chance in this struggle.
“Move,” Manny whispered into Tessa’s ear.
“Move? To–to where? I’m not going with you!” Tessa stammered in panic.
Is he kidding me? I’m not going anywhere. I’m staying right here with Victor.
Now that Victor had arrived, even though she was still in Manny’s grasp, she felt a distinct surge of security.
“I’m taking your advice,” Manny murmured. “I’m leaving Noctarth. But you at least have to see me to a safe location, hm?”
That phrase, I’m taking your advice, hung in the tense air with a strange, loaded weight.
Tessa’s heart hammered against her ribs.
Victor’s expression, meanwhile, was deathly grim…
“Let’s go.”
With that, Manny kept his hold on Tessa and began backing toward the warehouse door. As they moved, he shouted to Victor, “Have everyone outside pull back. Now!”
Victor: “Fine.”
The look in his eyes grew increasingly dangerous, but he spoke into his phone nonetheless. “Everyone, retreat fifty meters.”

It had to be said that while Manny usually seemed like a pampered lightweight, he was, after all, raised within the Ashen Pact. Moreover, Dale had groomed him as an heir from a young age. The moment Victor arrived with his men, Manny had sensed their presence…
Manny kept Tessa pulled tightly against him, ensuring that Victor’s men didn’t dare make a move. Especially considering how accurate Lewis’s marksmanship was…
In the shadows, Silas, who was positioned with Lewis, whispered, “Isn’t the angle perfect right now?”
“The angle is fine,” Lewis replied tensely. “But haven’t you noticed his arm is locked around her neck the whole time?”
“And?”
“If I take the shot now, she’s definitely going to hit the ground with him. What if the fall causes complications with the baby?”
They had all seen exactly what Tessa meant to Victor. Victor had even been willing to walk away from everything just for her sake. To him, she was everything!
Whether it was Tessa herself or the child, they were both of paramount importance to him. Under these circumstances, if anything happened to the baby, Victor would truly lose it!
Silas noticed that Lewis’s hands were actually trembling. This was a first…
As they watched Manny lead Tessa closer and closer to the car, Silas hissed, “We can’t let them get in that vehicle.”
Once they were in the car, things would spiral out of control. At this moment, neither Silas nor Lewis knew what had actually transpired between Tessa and Manny inside. They only knew that if she was taken away, finding her again wouldn’t be easy.
Hearing Silas’s words, Lewis’s hands shook even more. “You think I don’t know that?”
“The problem is I have to guarantee a kill shot, and I have to guarantee he stays on his feet while I do it!”
Silas: “…”
“I don’t have that kind of skill!” Lewis snapped.
“This…”
It seemed no one had that kind of skill.

Lewis had only one thought in his mind: nothing could happen to Tessa. She couldn’t be allowed to fall. Nothing could go wrong with the child in her womb. But who could possibly guarantee that?
“We’re running out of time,” Silas urged. “Take the shot!”
At those words, Lewis’s hands gave a violent shudder.
Over by the car.
Manny looked at the vehicle before them and leaned into Tessa’s ear. “See me off just a little further?”
“I don’t want to get in the car,” Tessa refused.
There’s no one around us right now. I shouldn’t have to go any further, right?
“Fine,” Manny relented. “Then you take care of yourself.”
Tessa: “…”
“1
Huh? What does he mean by that?
Before Tessa could react, Manny whispered one last thing into her ear: “I’ll come back for you.”
Tessa: “…”
No thanks. Please, absolutely don’t.
With only a single step left between them and the car, Manny released her and lunged toward the open door with lightning speed.
Theo was stunned to see him let her go.
Simultaneously, a gunshot rang out. Just as Manny was diving into the car, there was a loud bang, followed immediately by the sound of a bullet tearing through flesh.
With a wet splat, something warm and sticky sprayed directly onto Tessa’s face.
The scene erupted into chaos. Dangerous shouts and gunfire became a frantic, overlapping
mess!
As for Tessa… though she had spent time by Marie’s side, her mind went completely blank in that moment.
