In Evie’s mind, Rianne seemed like the type who preferred “clean” dining options.

“I’m actually craving some barbecue,” Rianne said. “Is that okay?”

His attitude was always that since she was “his,” he should be the one to decide what she was allowed to eat. She truly detested things like foie gras or anything poached in red wine. But he had strictly forbidden barbecue.

Finding a kindred spirit at last, Rianne ordered a massive spread.

About forty minutes later, the doorbell rang. She went to answer it, expecting the delivery driver, but found Eddie standing at the door instead.

Rianne’s heart skipped a beat. “Professor McKenzie?”

“Did you order takeout?” Eddie asked.

He held up a delivery bag right in front of her. “Yes, I did,” Rianne stammered. “Wait, is this for me?”

“I figured you might not have eaten, so I picked something up for you.”

Inside the room, the moment Evie heard Eddie’s voice, she began scrambling into her clothes.

Rianne looked at the bag of fried chicken and then at the barbecue delivery that had just arrived. “This is so much food. We’ll never finish it all.”

“Can’t return it now,” Eddie noted.

That was true enough; once the food left the kitchen, there was no going back.

Before Rianne could respond, Evie emerged from the room, fully dressed. “I just got a phone call, I have to head out for a bit.”

“What? You’re leaving?” Rianne asked, surprised. “But the food is here!”

“You eat with my brother.” Evie waved a hand dismissively as she slipped out the door.
