“Was she injured?” he asked.

Elias nodded once. “The transport was attacked near the eastern checkpoint.”

“Answer the question properly,” I snapped.

“She survived.”

Relief hit me briefly before fury replaced it again. The council was already trying to erase people faster than we could expose them.

I grabbed the nearest sweater and pulled it over my clothes quickly. Conrad watched me carefully while Elias handed him the preliminary reports.

“They’re scared.” I muttered.

Conrad’s eyes lifted toward me slowly. “Yes.”

“They know Bethany can expose all of them.”

The silence in the room confirmed it immediately. This was no longer only about succession politics or Conrad’s instability.

The council was trying to bury years of corruption before the entire Alpha system collapsed publicly.

I moved toward the desk and started reading through the attack details myself. The convoy route had been altered only an hour before the assault.

Someone inside the council leaked the change deliberately.

“They’re getting sloppy,” I said quietly.

Conrad stepped beside me. “Desperate wolves usually do.”

I looked up at him sharply. “We cannot lose her yet.”

His expression hardened slightly. “I know.”

“No,” I corrected. “You don’t understand.”

He stayed silent while I continued scanning the reports.

“If Bethany dies before the hearing, they’ll blame everything on her,” I said. “The elders walk away clean, Holmes disappears into the background, and the twins‘ mother becomes another buried scandal.”

Silence spread across the channel.

Several neutral territory leaders exchanged looks openly while the representative struggled for a response. Conrad sat quietly beside me during the entire exchange without interrupting once.

That mattered more than the representatives realized.

He was letting me lead publicly now.

After the meeting ended, Elias entered carrying updated territory reports. His expression looked almost surprised.

“Three neutral territories just announced support for independent succession investigations,” he informed us.

I blinked once. “Already?”

“They released statements during the meeting.”

Conrad leaned back slowly beside me. I caught the small look of pride he tried hiding before he returned to reading the

reports.

“You’re forcing them into mistakes,” Elias admitted.

“That’s the point.”

Later that afternoon, I walked through the nursery with Kyra while workers finished adjusting shelves along the far wall. The room looked warmer now than it had weeks ago.

Kyra sat cross–legged on the carpet holding folded baby clothes quietly. Her expression looked calmer than it had in days.

“Do you think the baby will like this room?” she asked softly.

“You missed sparring again,” he accused Conrad.

Conrad glanced up from the reports calmly. “I was busy.”

“You’re always busy now.”

I exchanged a look with Conrad briefly before speaking. “Zane.”

“No,” he snapped. “Everyone keeps saying things are getting better, but nobody is ever around anymore.”

The frustration in his voice sounded younger than usual. Conrad stood slowly from behind the desk. “Come here.”

Zane hesitated before finally walking closer.

Conrad rested a hand against the back of his neck briefly. “You’re right.”

Zane blinked. “What?”

“You’re right,” Conrad repeated. “I’ve been distracted.”

The tension in Zane’s face shifted immediately.

“You still promised training” he muttered.

“And I’ll keep the promise.”

The irritation finally cracked enough for Zane to relax slightly. Watching Conrad handle him so naturally still affected me every time.
