Chapter 127

I stared at Bethany’s message for a long time after reading it. The words felt wrong in a way I could not ignore.
Holmes is planning something reckless before he final succession hearing begins.
Bethany had manipulated, threatened, and lied for years but fear rarely touched her voice. This time, I could feel it clearly even through a screen.
Conrad noticed my expression immediately when he entered the room. “What happened?”
I handed him the device without speaking.
He read the message once before his jaw tightened. “You think she’s telling the truth?”
“Yes,” I answered quietly. “And I think she’s afraid of him.”
That changed the atmosphere immediately.
上
For the first time in years, Bethany sounded less like someone controlling events and more like someone trying to survive them. That realization unsettled me more than I expected.
Conrad moved closer without hesitation. “Whatever Holmes is planning, you won’t handle it alone.”
I leaned back against the chair slowly. “I know.”
The words came naturally now.
Months ago, I would have carried the pressure alone automatically. I would have treated fear like weakness and silence like protection.
Conrad changed that without forcing it.
Later that night, neither of us slept properly.
I stayed curled against his chest while security updates continued arriving through his office screen nearby. Conrad’s fingers moved absentmindedly through my hair while he reviewed reports.
“You should rest,” he murmured quietly.
“You’re still awake too.”
“I’m Supreme Alpha,” he replied. “Apparently I’m forbidden from sleeping.”
I snorted softly against him. “That sounds fake.”
“It probably is.”
His hand drifted lower slowly until it rested against my stomach.
The baby shifted slightly beneath his palm, and Conrad immediately went still.
“There,” he said quietly.

“Because it still feels unreal”

His expression softened before he leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss against ray stomach. The affection in such a small action hit me harder lately.
Conrad did things without calculation.
That was what still surprised me most about loving hims
I closed my eyes briefly while his hand stayed protectively against me. My anxiety had not disappeared, but being near him stopped it from swallowing me whole.
The next morning, tension spread through the territory quickly.
Zane overheard enough discussion between guards to realize Holmes might target us publicly again. By breakfast, he was already following Kyra everywhere with visible irritation.
“You don’t need to walk behind me constantly,” Kyra complained.
“Yes, you do.”
“I’m going to the kitchen.”
“That’s still a location.”
Kyra rolled her eyes dramatically before sitting beside me at the table.
“He’s being weird again,” she muttered.
“I can hear you,” Zane snapped immediately.
Conrad walked into the dining room carrying reports in one hand. He took one look at Zane’s expression and immediately understood something was wrong.
“What happened?”
Zane crossed his arms tightly. “Nothing.”
“That answer usually means something happened,” Conrad replied calmly. A
Zane stayed quiet for several seconds before finally blurting out the truth.
“I heard the guards talking about Holmes again.”
The room became still.
Kyra looked down at her plate immediately. Conrad remained calm, but I saw the tension settle into his shoulders.
Zane’s voice lowered slightly. “What if he tries hurting this family again?”
I stood carefully and walked toward him.
“He won’t get the chance,” I said gently.

I crouched slightly despite Conrad immediately looking concerned about the strain.

“Protecting people doesn’t san carrying everything alone,” I told him softly. “It also means trusting the people standing beside you.”
Zane looked uncertain.
“You trust Conrad, right?”
“Yes.
“You trust me?”
He nodded slower this time.
“Then trust that we know how to protect this family together.”
Something in his expression finally eased slightly after that.
Conrad watched the entire conversation quietly from across the room. I noticed the way his eyes stayed fixed on me afterward, thoughtful and emotional at the same time.
Later that afternoon, one of our intelligence wolves arrived privately with sealed files.
“They came through the intermediary Bethany mentioned,” he explained carefully.
Conrad immediately moved beside me as I opened them.
The deeper I read, the colder I became.
Holmes had been preparing evidence for the final succession hearing for months. Not political evidence.
Personal attacks.
Psychological evaluations. Old reports from my former pack. Private accounts from wolves Bethany bribed years ago.
He planned to publicly question my emotional fitness as a mother in front of the entire council.
The room stayed silent after I finished reading.
Conrad looked furious instantly. “I’ll destroy him before he reaches that hearing.”
“No,” I said calmly.
He turned toward me sharply.
“He wants emotional reactions,” I continued. “That’s the entire strategy.”
Conrad’s jaw tightened visibly. “He’s trying to humiliate you publicly.”
“I know.”
The strange thing was that I did not feel panic anymore.
