Chapter 128

I stared at the final recording file while tension settled heavily inside the room. Holmes had not only betrayed me years ago.
He had documented my pain carefully like something he planned to use later.
Conrad stood beside my chair with one hand resting against my shoulder. His jaw stayed tight while the screen displayed rows of recording dates from years ago.
“I can stop this before the hearing,” he said quietly. “The council cannot legally use private recordings obtained without
consent.”
I leaned back slowly. “That won’t stop Holmes from trying.”
“No, but it stops the recordings from spreading publicly.”
I shook my head once. “I’m tired of hiding from things he did to me.”
Conrad looked down at me carefully.

“If Holmes wants wolves hearing who I used to be,” I continued softly, “then they’ll also see who I became afterward.”
Something emotional shifted in his expression at those words. He brushed his fingers lightly against my cheek before nodding once.
“Then we handle it together.”
The recordings stretched across years of my relationship with Holmes. Some were ordinary conversations from inside our old house.
Conrad stayed awake with me long after midnight while we/reviewed them carefully. The room remained dark except for the soft light from the screen.
My chest tightened as another recording started playing. Old me sounded exhausted.
“Holmes,” my voice whispered shakily through the speakers, “can you please just talk to me properly for once?”
Silence answered first.
Then Holmes sighed impatiently. “Why do you always make everything emotional?”
The sound of my own voice hurt more than I expected.
“I’m your wife.”
“And I’m busy trying to secure our future.”
“You barely look at me anymore.”
Conrad immediately paused the recording.

I stared at the dark screen while humiliation crawled slowly through me. I remembered exactly how that night felt.

the confusion. The desperation
The constant feeling that if I just loved him correctly, things would improve again.
“I sounded pathetic,” I whispered.
Conrad crouched beside my chair instantly. “No.”
I laughed weakly without humor. “I begged him to communicate with me like I was asking for charity.”
“You were asking your mate to treat you properly.”
The tightness in my chest finally cracked open after that.

I covered my face briefly while tears burned behind my eyes. Months ago, I would have hidden something like this from Conrad completely.
Now I let him see it.
Conrad pulled me gently into his arms without speaking further. He simply held me while I cried quietly against his chest.
There was no judgment in him. No discomfort.
“I hate hearing who I used to be,” I admitted eventually.
Conrad tilted my chin upward carefully. “I don’t.”
I frowned slightly.
“She survived him,” he said softly. “That woman deserved better too.”
My throat tightened again immediately. Conrad kissed me slowly afterward, patient and gentle. The intimacy felt emotional instead of heated.
Safe instead of uncertain. Later that night, neither of us wanted distance.
We ended up lying tangled together beneath the blankets while rain hit softly against the windows outside. Conrad kept one arm securely around me the entire time like he thought letting go might break something.
I rested my head against his chest while exhaustion finally settled into me properly.
“You know what scares Holmes most?” Conrad murmured quietly.
“What?”
“That none of this makes you love him again.”
The truth of that settled deeply inside me.
Holmes wanted emotional control back more than anything else. That was why he kept trying to drag old versions of me into public view.
But I was not that woman anymore.
The next morning, tension spread through the territory quickly after rumors about the recordings leaked through Alpha channels. Guards whispered carelessly in hallways before realizing Zane was nearby.

“What happened?” I asked gently,
“Nothing.”
Conrad snorted softly from beside me. “That answer usually means someone annoyed you.”
Zane crossed his arms tighter. “The guards were talking about Holmes again.”
Kyra looked down immediately.
I exchanged a quick glance with Conrad before focusing back on Zane.
“What were they saying?”
“That he made you cry all the time.”
Anger flashed openly across his face.
“And they kept talking like it was gossip.”
The room became quiet for several seconds.
Kyra finally spoke softly. “Did he really hurt you that much?”
I reached for her hand across the table.
“Yes,” I answered honestly. “But that part of my life ended already.”
Zane still looked furious. “I hate him.”
“I know.”
“He keeps trying to hurt this family.”
Conrad leaned back slightly beside me. “And he keeps failing.”
Zane’s expression eased only slightly after that.
Later that afternoon, Conrad and I continued reviewing the recordings privately inside his office. Most focused heavily on our old relationship.
