I stared at the photograph in my hands as we stood near the academy exit, and a cold feeling settled in my stomach.

The picture had clearly been taken inside the school earlier that day, and neither Zane nor I had noticed anyone following

Zane grabbed the photograph from me and examined it carefully. His expression changed immediately when he realized it showed both of us standing outside our wolf control class only a few hours earlier.

“Who took this?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” I replied.

Students continued walking past us toward waiting vehicles and family escorts. Nobody seemed interested in us, which somehow made the situation feel even stranger.

The anonymous note attached to the photograph contained only one sentence. The handwriting looked similar to the note that had appeared in Zane’s locker.

“Still watching.”

Zane folded the paper immediately and slipped both items into his backpack. His jaw tightened in a way that reminded me of Conrad whenever something annoyed him.

“We’re showing Mom and Conrad as soon as we get home,” he said.

I nodded because I had no intention of keeping secrets about this. The academy suddenly felt less exciting than it had that morning.

Our security escort arrived a few moments later and led us toward the vehicle waiting outside the main gates. Neither of us mentioned the photograph during the ride because several other students were sharing transportation routes.

Instead, I watched the passing scenery through the window and thought about my first day. It had not gone exactly how I imagined.

The academy itself was huge compared to anything I had experienced before. Hundreds of students filled the halls, classrooms, training fields, and common areas.

By lunchtime, I had already gotten lost twice.

The only reason I found the dining hall was because the girl from orientation spotted me wandering in the wrong direction. She laughed so hard she nearly dropped her lunch tray.

“You have absolutely no idea where you’re going,” she told me.

“That’s not true,” I argued.

“It is completely true.”

Her name was Maya, and she quickly became the easiest person to talk to. Unlike some students, she treated me like a normal person instead of focusing on my family.

Unfortunately, not everyone behaved that way.

Several students seemed fascinated by the fact that Conrad was my father and Amorah was my mother. Some asked harmless questions while others acted like they expected me to entertain them with stories.

One girl even asked whether lived in a castle.

I still wasn’t sure if she had been joking.

Wolf control training turned out to be my favorite class of the day. The instructor focused on practical skills rather than competition, and most of the students seemed genuinely interested.

Scent awareness class surprised me even more.

I had spent my entire life around werewolves, yet I never realized how much information people could gather from scent alone. The lessons felt useful instead of boring.

Territorial history was another story entirely.

I thought I was going to fall asleep before the first lesson ended.

When school finally finished, I expected Zane to complain about everything. Instead, he seemed suspiciously comfortable.

That annoyed me more than I wanted to admit.

As soon as we arrived home, I followed him directly to the main house. The photograph stayed hidden inside his backpack the entire time.

We found Amorah feeding the baby in the family room while Conrad reviewed documents nearby. Lyra sat on the opposite side of the room folding laundry.

The moment Amorah saw our faces, she frowned.

“What happened?” she asked.

Zane removed the photograph and note from his bag without saying a word. Conrad immediately set his work aside and stood up.

The atmosphere in the room changed instantly.

Amorah carefully handed the baby to Lyra before reaching for the photograph. Her expression grew more serious with every passing second.

“Where did you get this?” she asked.

“I found it after school,” I answered.

“Was anyone nearby?”

“No.”

Conrad examined the image next and looked no happier. His eyes moved from the photograph to the note and back again.

“This was taken today,” he said.

“That’s what we thought.”

Lyra remained quiet while holding the baby, but I noticed concern on her face. Even she understood why this bothered

everyone.

The picture itself wasn’t dangerous.

The problem was that somebody had taken it without our knowledge.

Conrad immediately contacted/academy security white Amorah asked us detailed questions about our entire day. Neither of them sounded angry.

They sounded worried.

That realization made me feel guilty even though I had done nothing wrong. I hated causing extra stress when everyone was already adjusting to life with a newborn.

The baby suddenly made a small noise from Lyra’s arms. Every adult in the room glanced over immediately.

I exchanged a look with Zane.

Some things never changed.

After another round of questions, Conrad finally lowered his phone. His expression remained thoughtful.

“The academy is reviewing security footage,” he said.

“Will they find who did it?” I asked.

“We’ll see.”

That wasn’t the answer I wanted.

Dinner felt quieter than usual afterward. Everyone tried acting/normal, but the photograph lingered in the back of our minds.

Even the baby seemed unusually calm.

Later that evening, Zane and I sat together in the family room while Amorah carried the baby upstairs. Conrad followed shortly afterward, leaving us alone for a few minutes.

“You actually liked school,” I said.

Zane rolled his eyes immediately.

“No, I didn’t.”

“You made friends.”
