The morning after security identified the source of the anonymous notes, Conrad and I sat inside the estate office reviewing the final report. I felt relieved when I learned the student connected to everything was not a threat to our family.

The report included photographs, interviews, and messages gathered by the academy administration. Every piece of evidence pointed toward the same conclusion.

“It was the girl from orientation,” Conrad said as he lowered the tablet. “The one Kyra became friendly with.”

I leaned back in my chair and released a slow breath. That was not the answer I had expected.

A few minutes later, the girl arrived at the estate with her parents and an academy representative. Everyone looked nervous, especially the girl herself.

Kyra immediately recognized her and hurried forward. The girl’s shoulders relaxed slightly when she saw a familiar face.

“Hi,” Kyra said softly. “You look like you’re about to faint.”

The girl gave a weak laugh. “My parents said I accidentally started a security investigation.”

“Yeah,” Kyra replied. “That tends to make people nervous.”

Conrad almost smiled beside me while Zane rolled his eyes. The tension in the room eased slightly.

The girl’s name was Lily, and she looked genuinely miserable about the trouble she had caused. Her parents appeared equally embarrassed.

“We want to apologize,” Lily’s mother said. “None of this was intentional.”

Lily nodded quickly and clasped her hands together. She looked like she had rehearsed this conversation several times.

“I wasn’t trying to scare anyone,” she said. “I thought I was helping.”

I studied her face carefully while she spoke. Everything about her felt sincere.

Conrad remained quiet and allowed the conversation to continue naturally. He wanted answers, but he also wanted to understand how this situation had happened.

Lily explained that her family owned several boxes of old photographs inherited from relatives. Most of them had remained untouched for years.

“A few months ago, my grandmother started organizing them,” Lily said. “She showed me some of the pictures.”

Kyra listened carefully while Zane crossed his arms beside her. Neither twin interrupted.

“Then I saw you during orientation,” Lily continued. “You looked exactly like someone in one of the photographs.”

The academy representative handed over several copies of the images. I immediately understood why Lily had been surprised.

One photograph showed a younger woman standing beside two children. One of the children looked remarkably similar to Kyra.

wasni actually her, Lily said quickly. “I know that now.”

Kyra examined the photograph with wide eyes. The resemblance was noticeable even to me.

“I thought maybe your family would want to see it,” Lily explained. “That’s why I left the note.”

The explanation was simple and believable. Unfortunately, it had also been a terrible decision.

“You should have spoken to us directly,” Conrad said calmly. “Leaving anonymous messages frightened people.”

Lily’s face immediately turned red. She looked down at her shoes.

“I know,” she admitted. “I’m sorry.”

Her father sighed heavily beside her. It was obvious this conversation had already happened many times.

“We’ve discussed it extensively,” he said. “Curiosity got the better of her.”

Zane finally spoke for the first time. His tone remained cautious.

“So you weren’t spying on us?”

Lily looked horrified by the suggestion. She shook her head so quickly that her hair moved across her shoulders.

“No,” she said. “Absolutely not.”

The answer came without hesitation. Even Zane seemed satisfied.

Once the meeting ended, the academy representative promised additional guidance regarding privacy and student conduct. The situation officially closed without any disciplinary action.

After Lily and her family left, Kyra immediately asked the question everyone expected. She wanted to know if she could still be friends with her.

“I think she’s nice,” Kyra said. “She just made a dumb decision,”

“That’s a fair assessment,” Conrad replied.

Zane snorted from the couch. His expression suggested he found the entire situation ridiculous.

“That’s because you make dumb decisions every day,” he told his sister.

Kyra immediately threw a cushion at him. He caught it before it reached his face.

The argument lasted exactly thirty seconds before both of them forgot why they were fighting. Some things never changed.

Later that afternoon, I sat in the nursery feeding the baby while watching sunlight filter through the windows. The house felt peaceful again.

Conrad entered carrying two mugs of tea. He handed one to me before settling into the chair beside mine.

“For the first time in weeks,” he said, “nobody is chasing a crisis.”

I laughed softly and adjusted the baby against my shoulder. That statement alone felt like a victory.

“We should enjoy it while it lasts,” I replied.

Honrad nodded and reached for my hand. The familiar gesture still comforted me every time.

For a few minutes, neither of us spoke We simply enjoyed the rare quiet.

Eventually, the conversation shifted toward the future. It happened naturally, the way important discussions often did.

“Have you ever thought about what happens next?” Conrad asked.

I looked at him curiously. His expression remained thoughtful.

“Next week?” I asked.

“No,” he said. “Years from now.”

The question surprised me because we rarely talked that far ahead. Most of our lives had been spent dealing with immediate problems.

I glanced toward the baby sleeping peacefully in my arms. Then I thought about Kyra and Zane growing older.

“I think about it more now,” I admitted.

Conrad leaned back in his chair and folded his arms. He seemed unusually relaxed.

“The twins will eventually leave for university,” he said. “The baby will grow up too.”

The thought felt strange. At the same time, it felt inevitable.

“You’re making me feel old,” I told him.

“You are old,” he replied.

I immediately kicked his leg. He laughed before reaching for my hand again.

“What I mean is that we’ll eventually have time for ourselves again,” he said. “Actual free time.”

The idea sounded almost impossible. Still, I found myself smiling.

“Maybe we’ll travel,” I suggested.

‘Maybe we’ll sleep,” Conrad answered.

That answer made me laugh harder than it should have. Exhaustion had lowered all of our standards.
