The tiny wolf disappeared so quickly that for a moment I wondered if I had imagined it. Then I looked around the room and saw the same shock on every face staring at our baby.
The estate healer moved first and reached the crib before anyone else could react. Our son blinked up at him innocently and released a sleepy yawn.
“What just happened?” Kyra whispered.
Nobody answered her because nobody seemed to know the answer. Even Conrad looked completely caught off guard.
The healer carefully lifted the baby and checked him from head to toe. Our son responded by grabbing the healer’s finger and trying to put it in his mouth.
“He seems normal,” the healer said slowly.
“Normal babies don’t become wolves for a second,” Zane pointed out.
The healer sighed heavily and handed the baby back to me. I settled him against my chest while Conrad remained close enough to catch either of us if he thought we needed help.
The rest of the evening disappeared into questions and examinations. Every specialist available within the territory seemed determined to give an opinion.
By morning, I was exhausted.
Our bedroom had become a revolving door of doctors, healers, wolf specialists, and advisors. Every one of them wanted to study the baby or offer a theory.
Conrad listened to every suggestion carefully. I wanted to throw all of them out of the house.
“He needs observation,” one specialist said.
“He needs rest,” I replied.
The woman hesitated before nodding respectfully. Then she finally left the room along with the others.
Conrad closed the door behind them and released a tired breath. I watched him check the crib for the fifth time in ten
minutes.
“You know he’s sleeping,” I said.
“I know.”
“Then stop checking.”
Conrad glanced toward the crib again anyway. I narrowed my eyes at him immediately.
“You just looked.”
“I was making sure.”
I laughed despite myself and shook my head. Parenthood seemed to be affecting him more than he wanted to admit.

the bally stirred softly in his crib and immediately settled again. Conrad relaxed only after confirming that everything was
still fine.
Later that afternoon, another healer arrived with additional recommendations. Conrad listened attentively while I struggled not to roll my eyes.
“He should never be left alone.”,
The statement immediately earned my attention.
“That’s impossible,” I said.
The healer looked surprised by my response. Conrad rubbed the back of his neck while trying not to smile.
“He may possess unusual abilities.”
“He’s also a baby,” I reminded her.
The healer continued talking anyway. By the time she finally left, my patience had completely disappeared.
I found Conrad standing beside the nursery window several minutes later. He looked thoughtful and slightly worried.
“You agree with them,” I said.
“I agree we should be careful.”
I folded my arms and stared at him. The baby monitor rested on the table between us.
“Careful and paranoid are different things.”
Conrad walked closer and rested his hands on my shoulders. His expression softened immediately.
“I know.”
“Do you?”
He smiled faintly at that question. Then he leaned forward and kissed my forehead.
“I’m trying.”
That answer was honest enough to calm me. I rested my head briefly against his chest before stepping back.
The rest of the day became surprisingly normal. The baby needed feeding, diaper changes, and constant attention just like every other newborn.
Kyra and Zane, however, had developed an entirely new mission. They had decided to research every unusual wolf child in recorded history.
I found them sitting together in the library surrounded by books, tablets, and handwritten notes. Neither of them noticed me at first.
“This one shifted early.”
“Three months isn’t early.”
Kyra frowned at her brother immediately. Zane pointed toward another article.

This one learned scent recognition before walking.”
Kyra brightened.
“That’s impressive.”
I cleared my throat loudly. Both twins jumped at the sound.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“Research.”
“Important research.”
I stared at them for several seconds. Then I looked at the mountain of materials surrounding their chairs.
“You two need hobbies.”
“We have hobbies,” Kyra protested.
“This is one of them,” Zane added.
I left them to their investigation before they could drag me into it. Some battles were not worth fighting.

When I returned downstairs, I found Lyra helping organize supplies in the kitchen. She looked up when I entered and offered a small smile.
“How are you doing?”
“Tired.”
She nodded immediately. There was no awkwardness in her response.
“That sounds accurate.”
I laughed quietly and sat down. Lyra handed me a drink without being asked.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
For a while we talked about simple things. The conversation stayed focused on the baby, school preparations, and household
routines.
Nothing about Conrad came up. Nothing felt uncomfortable.
At one point I caught myself enjoying the conversation. The realization surprised me more than I expected.
