Chapter 190-
Chapter 190

I lowered my phone slowly and looked across the living room while everyone continued pretending life was normal. Ever since our son’s unusual development became impossible to ignore, every day seemed to begin with questions nobody could
answer.
The baby rested peacefully in his carrier while Kyra sat beside him with a storybook in her lap. Zane sat on the opposite couch pretending to read school material while secretly watching his brother every few minutes.
“He’s sleeping again,” Kyra whispered.
“That’s usually what babies do,” Zane replied.
Kyra rolled her eyes at him immediately. Zane ignored her and returned to his book as if he had delivered important wisdom.
I smiled despite myself and adjusted the blanket around the baby. Moments like these reminded me why I refused to let fear control our family.
Conrad entered the room carrying two cups of coffee. He handed one to me before sitting beside me and glancing toward
our son.
“Any strange glowing today?” he asked.
“Not yet.”
“Good.”
I laughed softly and shook my head. His serious expression only made the conversation more ridiculous.
“You realize most fathers worry about diapers,” I said.
“Our child shifted before he could crawl.”
“Fair point.”
Conrad leaned back against the couch and watched the children. For a moment everything felt peaceful enough that I almost forgot about journalists, rumors, and endless discussions with healers.
The front door opened a few minutes later and Lyra stepped inside carrying several shopping bags. Kyra immediately jumped to her feet and hurried across the room.
“Did you get them?” Kyra asked.
“I got everything on your list,” Lyra replied.
“Even the blue decorations?”
“Especially the blue decorations.”
Kyra grinned and grabbed one of the bags. Lyra laughed as she followed her toward the dining room.
I watched them disappear around the corner and realized something had changed. A few months ago I would have spent the entire interaction looking for hidden motives.

Now I simply saw two people enjoying each other’s company. That realization surprised me more than I wanted to admit.
Conrad noticed my expression almost immediately. He reached over and squeezed my hand.
“You’re thinking.”
“I usually am.”
“You know what I mean.”
I glanced toward the dining room before answering. The sound of Kyra’s excited voice carried through the house.
“I think she’s been trying very hard.”
Conrad nodded once. He never pushed me when it came to Lyra.
“She has.”
“I noticed.”
A small smile appeared on his face. The conversation ended there because it didn’t need anything else.
The rest of the afternoon passed quietly. The twins worked on school projects while Lyra helped them organize materials, and the baby spent most of his time moving between naps and feedings.
Later that evening Conrad approached me while I was cleaning bottles in the kitchen. He took the towel from my hands before I could protest.
“Get your coat.”
I frowned immediately. His expression became suspiciously innocent.
“Why?”
‘Because we’re leaving.”
‘Leaving where?”
‘It’s a surprise.”
I stared at him for several seconds. He stared back with the confidence of someone who knew he would eventually win.
‘Conrad.”
‘Coat.”
I sighed dramatically. He looked far too pleased with himself.
An hour later we sat together on a quiet terrace overlooking one of the territory’s lakes. The restaurant was private, the food was excellent, and for the first time in weeks nobody needed us for anything.
“This is nice,” I admitted.
“I remembered how much you liked this place.”
I looked at him across the table. The fact that he remembered something I had casually mentioned years ago made my

“You remember everything.
“Not everything.”
“Almost everything.”
He accepted that accusation without argument. That alone told me I was right.

For a while we simply enjoyed the silence. It felt strange being alone together after so much time spent balancing children. responsibilities, and unexpected chaos.
Eventually Conrad reached for my hand. His thumb brushed lightly across my knuckles.
“What are you thinking about?”
I considered the question carefully. For years every answer would have involved survival, revenge, betrayal, or fear.
“Honestly?”
“Always.”
I smiled faintly. The answer surprised even me.
“I’m thinking about the future.”
His expression softened immediately. He leaned forward slightly.
“Tell me.”
I looked out across the water before speaking. The night air felt cool against my skin.
“I want normal things.”
“Such as?”
“I want family vacations.”
Conrad nodded.
“Done.”
“I want to watch the twins grow up.”
“You will.”
“I want our son to have a childhood.”
“He will.”
I squeezed his hand. The certainty in his voice felt comforting rather than arrogant.
“I want peace.”
For the first time he didn’t answer immediately. He looked thoughtful as he considered the word.

want that too.”
We sat quietly for several seconds. Then Conrad surprised me.
“I want a house by the ocean someday.”
I blinked.
“You hate sand.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
He shrugged one shoulder.
“You once said you always wanted to live near the water.”
I stared at him. Sometimes he paid attention to things I had forgotten saying myself.
“You’re serious.”
“I am.”

I laughed softly and shook my head. The conversation felt so ordinary that it became extraordinary.
For the first time in years we weren’t discussing threats. We were discussing possibilities.
“What else?” I asked.
Conrad thought for a moment.
“I want to embarrass our children when they’re older.”
