I stopped outside my parents’ office when I heard my name mentioned from inside the room. I had only been looking for Conrad because he promised to review my training schedule after dinner.

The door was slightly open, and their voices echoed into the hallway before I could announce myself. I knew I should walk away, but something in Conrad’s tone made me stay.

“The journalist is still asking questions,” Conrad said. “Security is handling it, but we need to be careful.”

I heard Amorah sigh heavily from inside the office. “I don’t want the children worrying about things they can’t control.”

That was the moment I realized they were talking about us again. For months, adults had been making decisions around me while pretending I was too young to notice.

“The rumors about the baby are spreading,” Conrad said. “Most people don’t believe them yet.”

Amorah was quiet for several seconds before speaking again. “He deserves a normal childhood.”

I knew immediately she meant my baby brother. The strange things surrounding him had become impossible to ignore, even though everyone tried acting normal.

Conrad lowered his voice. “That’s exactly why some information stays inside this family.”

I finally stepped away from the door and headed upstairs before they discovered me listening. For the first time, I understood that keeping secrets was not always about lying.

Sometimes people hid things because they were trying to protect someone they loved. That realization stayed with me long after the conversation ended.

The next morning, I arrived at the academy earlier than usual because wolf-training registration opened before classes. I had spent three days pretending I wasn’t interested.

My friend Mason immediately spotted me standing near the registration board. He grinned so hard that I considered walking away.

“I thought you didn’t care about the program,” he said. “You literally got here before the instructors.”

“I was already awake,” I replied. “That doesn’t mean anything.”

Mason laughed and handed me a registration form anyway. I filled it out before he could make another comment.

The competitive wolf-training program was designed for students with strong instincts and advanced control. Most participants were older than me, which made joining feel more important.

Our first evaluation took place on the academy training grounds after lunch. The instructors measured speed, scent tracking, reaction time, and discipline.

I enjoyed every second of it even though I refused to admit that out loud. Competing against other students felt different from training inside the estate.

Nobody cared who my parents were once the exercises began. They only cared whether I could keep up.

By the end of the afternoon, I had earned one of the highest scores among the younger students. Mason immediately

Sannounced the result to everyone nearby.

“You definitely care,” he said. “People who don’t care don’t finish second.”

I rolled my eyes and shoved his shoulder. Unfortunately, he was completely right.

When classes ended, I went looking for Kyra because we normally traveled home together. It took me almost fifteen minutes to find her.

She was standing with three girls near the student courtyard. They were laughing about something that apparently wasn’t important enough to include me in.

I waited nearby until she finally noticed me. Her expression changed immediately when she realized how long I had been standing there.

“Sorry,” she said. “We lost track of time.”

I shrugged like it didn’t matter. The truth was that it bothered me more than I wanted to admit.

Kyra had always been my favorite person to spend time with. Watching her build an entire social life without me felt strange.

“You have new friends now,” I said. “I guess you’re busy.”

She frowned immediately. “That’s not fair.”

I knew she was right as soon as the words left my mouth. Being annoyed didn’t mean I had a reason to blame her.

“You disappeared first,” Kyra said. “You’re always training now.”

I crossed my arms and looked away. Unfortunately, she was right about that too.

For a few seconds neither of us spoke. Then Kyra stepped closer and nudged my shoulder.

“We can still hang out after school,” she said. “Having friends doesn’t change that.”

The tension disappeared almost immediately. Some arguments only lasted because neither person wanted to be the first one to stop fighting.

When we arrived home, the baby was already awake and demanding everyone’s attention. That part of life had become very normal.

Lyra was helping feed him while Amorah organized bottles and blankets nearby. Conrad was pretending not to hover over

everyone.

“He’s been impossible all afternoon,” Lyra said. “I think he enjoys exhausting people.”

The baby immediately smiled after she said that. Everyone in the room laughed except Conrad, who looked suspicious.

“Don’t encourage him,” Conrad said. “He’s already difficult.”

The baby reached toward Amorah before she even entered the nursery. That alone was strange because he couldn’t possibly have seen her coming.

“He does that constantly now,” Lyra said quietly. “It’s getting stronger.”
