Chapter 203

The words Elias spoke about Cassian stayed in the back of my mind for days afterward. Even though the adults tried keeping their conversations private, it was impossible not to notice how often everyone looked at my little brother.
Life didn’t stop because of it though. The academy competition season officially started the following week, and suddenly everybody cared about training more than rumors.
I stood in the academy field surrounded by dozens of students. The instructors moved between groups while explaining rules for the upcoming wolf-skills competition.
“This isn’t a participation event.”
One instructor paced slowly in front of us.
“If you’re here, you’re here to compete.”
My stomach tightened slightly. Until that moment, the competition had sounded exciting.
Standing there among students who looked confident and experienced made it feel very different. A girl beside me stretched casually.
“You nervous?”
I glanced toward her.
“A little.”
She laughed. “Good.”
That wasn’t the answer I expected. “You are?”
“Terrified.”
We both laughed quietly. The conversation helped more than I wanted to admit.
At least I wasn’t the only one feeling overwhelmed. Training began immediately afterward.
The instructors divided us into groups and started evaluating our skills. For the first few exercises, I felt confident.
Then reality arrived. One student completed an obstacle course almost twice as fast as I did.
Another demonstrated wolf control techniques I had never even seen before. By lunch, my confidence had dropped considerably.
I found my friend group gathered near one of the outdoor tables. Everyone looked tired.
“How bad was it?”
My friend Maya dropped into the seat beside me. “I think an instructor laughed at me.”
“They weren’t laughing.”

They definitely were”
Another student shook his head.
“They laugh at everyone.”
“That’s somehow worse.”
The table erupted with laughter. Despite the stress, Lenjoyed moments like that.
For the first time in years, I had people my own age around me every day. School still felt strange sometimes.

It also felt good. When classes ended, I returned home exhausted. That evening, I sat at the dining table trying to finish
homework.
Competition training had already increased my workload significantly. Amosah noticed immediately.
“Long day?”
I sighed. “You have no idea.”
She sat beside me. “Worse than expected?”
“Much.”
Her expression softened. “That’s normal.”
I looked up.
“It is?”
“Of course.”
I frowned slightly. “You make everything look easy.”
She laughed. “I absolutely do not.”
“Yes, you do.”
“No.”
The conversation continued for several minutes. Somehow, I felt better afterward.
The next morning, training became even harder. The instructors started pairing us against one another during practical exercises.
I quickly discovered that enthusiasm wasn’t the same thing as skill. One student knocked me off balance three times during a single drill.
Another completed a tracking exercise before I even located the correct scent trail. The failures piled up quickly.
By lunchtime, frustration had started replacing excitement. I sat alone for several minutes before Maya joined me.
“You look miserable.”
“I feel miserable.”

she opened a bottle of water.
“That bad?”
“I thought I was good.”
The words escaped before I could stop them. Maya remained quiet.
Then she shrugged.
“You are.”

I stared at her.
“You haven’t seen today’s results.”
‘I don’t need to.”
That answer confused me.
“Then how do you know?”
“Because good doesn’t mean perfect.”
I hated how reasonable that sounded. The afternoon classes passed slowly.
Between academics and training, I barely had time to think. School wasn’t just school anymore.
Now it felt like a full-time commitment. When I finally returned home, I found Lyra helping Cassian in the nursery.
He sat surrounded by toys while she folded tiny clothes nearby.
“How was training?”
I dropped onto a chair.
“Terrible.”
Lyra smiled knowingly.
“That’s usually how improvement starts.”
I groaned dramatically.
“You sound like the instructors.”
“That’s unfortunate.”
Cassian suddenly looked toward the doorway. Several seconds later, Conrad entered the room.
Neither Lyra nor I missed it.
“He did it again.”
I pointed toward my brother.
