The silence after Elias revealed the photograph lasted for a few minutes. I found myself staring at my sleeping son and then back at the image again.

The resemblance refused to disappear. The more I looked, the more similarities! noticed.

Amorah sat beside me quietly. She didn’t rush me or try to explain something neither of us understood.

Elias eventually cleared his throat.

“I thought you should see it.”

I looked at him.

“Why now?”

“Because I didn’t notice it myself until I saw him.”

His answer felt genuine. That did not automatically make it comforting.

The following morning, I found myself sitting across from Elias again. Several boxes of old records rested between us on a large library table.

“You kept all this?”

Elias nodded.

“Someone had to.”

I opened the first box carefully. Inside were photographs, letters, journals, and family records stretching back decades.

None of it involved politics. None of it involved territory disputes. Instead, it was ordinary life. That surprised me.

One photograph showed my father as a teenager standing beside a fishing boat. Another showed my grandmother laughing during a family gathering.

I had never seen either image before.

“Where did you get these?”

“Most came from your grandmother.”

I picked up another photograph.

“Why wasn’t any of this preserved?”

Elias sighed.

“Because families lose things when they spend too much time surviving.”

That answer stayed with me. For the next several days, I spent hours reviewing records.

Every bux seemed to contain another piece of a family history I never knew existed. The discoveries felt strangely personal. I wasn’t uncovering secrets. I was uncovering people.

One evening, Amorah entered the library carrying coffee. She placed the mug beside me before looking down at the papers.

“You’ve been here for three hours.”

“Four.”

She laughed softly.

“That’s worse.”

I leaned back in my chair. “I didn’t know any of this existed.”

Her expression softened immediately. “You should keep reading.”

I looked toward the photographs spread across the table.

“Part of me feels stupid for caring.”

“You shouldn’t.”

I frowned slightly.

“Why?”

“Because they’re your family.”

The answer was simple. Somehow, it helped.

She sat beside me and picked up one of the photographs. It showed my father standing beside several relatives during a holiday celebration.

“He looks younger than I expected.”

“He does.”

We spent the next hour looking through records together. The conversation moved naturally from family history to our own family.

At some point, Amorah rested her head against my shoulder.

“You know what I think?”

“What?”

“I think Cassian is lucky.”

I looked down at her.

“Why?”

“Because he’ll grow up knowing where he came from.”

The comment hit harder than she probably intended. I wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

“He will.”

Meanwhile, life around the estate continued moving forward. The twins had become completely focused on the upcoming wolf-skills competition.

Every conversation somehow returned to training. Every meal became another opportunity to argue.

“I’ll finish higher than you.”

Kyra pointed her fork directly at Zane. “You wish.”

Zane rolled his eyes. “I don’t need to wish.”

“Keep telling yourself that.”

Their rivalry grew stronger every day. Neither one seemed willing to back down.

A few afternoons later, I found them training outside. Both looked exhausted.

“Take a break.”

Neither moved.

“Did you hear me?”

“We’re busy.” Kyra answered without even looking at me.

I exchanged a glance with Amorah.

“They get that from you.”

I pointed toward the twins.

She immediately shook her head.

“Absolutely not.”

“Definitely.”

“No.”

The argument lasted several minutes. The twins ignored us completely.

Back inside the estate, another situation continued developing. Bethany remained under supervision, and her frustration became increasingly obvious.

Nobody trusted her. Nobody forgot what she had done. Nobody cared to pretend otherwise. I needed her some piece of infirmation from her which meant i had to keep her close until she was of no use anymore.

One afternoon, I walked past the sitting room and noticed Bethany arguing quietly with one of the guards.

“I’ve cooperated.”

impressed “That doesn’t change protocol.”

Later that day, Lyra found her alone near the gardens. I happened to witness part of the conversation while passing nearby.

“This isn’t fair.”

Bethany crossed her arms tightly. Lyra looked at her for several seconds.

“No.”

Bethany seemed surprised by the response.

“No?”

“No.”

Lyra’s voice remained calm.

“Fair would have been making different choices years ago.”

Bethany’s expression hardened. “I’m trying.”

“I know.”

For a moment, neither woman spoke. Then Lyra sighed.

“But don’t mistake tolerance for forgiveness.”

The conversation ended shortly afterward. Neither woman seemed particularly happy afterward.

That evening, I returned to the library again. Elias had already/spread several new records across the table.

“You’ve become predictable.”

I sat down opposite him. “Apparently.”

He smiled. “Your father used to do the same thing.”

That earned his full attention.

“What?”

“When he found something interesting, he wouldn’t stop until he learned everything about it.”

I stared at the records.

“That sounds familiar.”

“It should.”

For the next hour, we reviewed more family history. Most of the stories were ordinary.

That made them valuable. One involved a family wedding. Another involved a disastrous fishing trip.

A third involved an argument over naming a puppy. The details made the people feel real.

Eventually, the discussion shifted toward Cassian. It happened naturally enough that I barely noticed at first.

Elias glanced toward a recent photograph sitting nearby.

“He’s remarkable.”

I followed his gaze.
