Chapter 207

Amorah POV

I could not stop thinking about the note Zane had received at school. Even while helping Cassian through breakfast, part of my mind remained focused on the growing number of strange things happening around our family.

Cassian sat in his high chair and repeatedly dropped a spoon onto the floor. Every time someone picked it up, he laughed as if it was the funniest thing he had ever seen.

“He’s doing that on purpose,” Kyra complained.

“Of course he is,” Zane replied.

Cassian grinned at both of them. Then he immediately threw the spoon again.

The twins groaned in unison. Their reaction only made him laugh harder.

For a few minutes, the morning felt normal. Then Bethany entered the dining room, and the atmosphere changed immediately.

Nobody said anything at first. Nobody needed to. Bethany noticed it too. She quietly took a seat near the end of the table.

Conrad remained focused on his coffee. The twins suddenly became very interested in their breakfasts.

I watched Bethany from across the room. The sight of her still brought back memories I wished I could forget.

Months ago, I would have given anything to see her lose everything. Now she had already done that herself.

She looked tired. She looked older.

Neither fact made me feel sorry for her. Bethany glanced in my direction. For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she looked away first. That small movement somehow irritated me even more.

After breakfast, the twins left for school. Conrad headed toward his office while I stayed behind with Cassian.

A short time later, I found Bethany alone in one of the sitting rooms. She was reviewing several files security had given her regarding Holmes’ former contacts.

She looked up when I entered. Her expression immediately became cautious.

“Amorah,” she said.

I closed the door behind me. For once, I did not want interruptions.

“We need to talk.

Bethany slowly lowered the papers in her hands. She seemed to understand the seriousness in my voice.

“All right.”

For several seconds, I simply looked at her. The words had been sitting inside me for months.

“You know what bothers me?” I asked.

hatty trained silent. She probably knew better than to interrupt

“You keep acting like enough time has passed”

Her face tightened slightly. She lowered her gaze.

“Amorah-”

“No.”

She stopped talking immediately. My voice had come out sharper than I intended.

“You don’t get to interrupt this.”

Bethany slowly nodded. For the first time, she seemed genuinely uncertain.

I folded my arms across my chest. The anger was not fresh anymore, but it was still there.

“You helped destroy my marriage.

Her shoulders stiffened. She still said nothing.

“You helped humiliate me publicly. You helped isolate me from people I trusted.”

The room remained silent except for the sound of Cassian babbling from the play area nearby.

“You helped convince me that I was worthless,” I continued.

Bethany closed her eyes briefly. When she opened them again, they looked slightly red.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Years of pain sat behind those three words.

“You don’t know what it felt like waking up every day wondering what I had done wrong.”

Bethany swallowed hard. She looked smaller than I remembered.

“You don’t know what it felt like losing everything.”

“I lost everything too,” she said quietly.

For a second, anger flashed through me. The comparison felt wrong.

“You chose your path.”

“I know,” she whispered.

I took a slow breath. Part of me wanted to keep arguing.

Another part was simply tired.

Bethany rubbed her hands together nervously. It was the first time I had ever seen her look uncertain.

Bethany looked up

“What?”

You got what you deserved”

The words came out calmly, Somehow, that made them hercher for worral wounds, the dimply wared at me. Then she dowly nodded.

The conversation could have ended there. Instead, she surprised me

‘I’m sorry”

Haughed once. There was no humor in it

‘Sorry doesn’t change anything”

‘I know”

I studied her carefully. For the first time in years, she looked completely honest.

That honesty did not erase the past

‘I don’t want your life destroyed anymore” I told her.

Bethany seemed surprised by that admission.

“You don’t”
