The news about the trusted employee spread through the estate faster than anyone expected. Even though security kept details private, everyone could feel the tension hanging over the household.
Nobody panicked openly. The uncertainty simply made people quieter than usual.
I started my morning helping coordinate schedules for the week. Between academy activities, competition training, medical appointments, and security meetings, almost everyone looked exhausted.
Conrad barely touched his breakfast before taking another phone call. Amorah looked just as tired, though she tried hard not to show it.
“You should sleep more,” I told her.
She gave me a look that suggested she found the idea amusing.
“Tell that to Cassian.”
I could not argue with that. Cassian seemed determined to keep everyone awake whenever possible.
The twins arrived downstairs shortly afterward. Both looked half asleep despite their attempts to appear energetic.
“I have a training session after school,” Zane announced.
“You say that like anybody asked,” Kyra replied.
“I was informing the family.”
“You were bragging.”
Zane rolled his eyes. Kyra looked pleased with herself.
The argument continued until they left for school. Nobody bothered stopping them because it had become part of the household routine.
After breakfast, I spent most of the morning helping staff reorganize schedules disrupted by the security investigation. The work kept me busy enough that I almost forgot how tense things had become.
Almost.

Every hallway conversation eventually returned to the same subject. Someone trusted for years had accessed private family information.
Nobody knew why. Nobody knew whether it had anything to do with Holmes.
The uncertainty made everyone uneasy.
Around midday, I headed toward the nursery carrying supplies Amorah had requested earlier. The moment I entered, Cassian immediately noticed me.
His entire face lit up.
“Oh no,” Amorah muttered.

Annah looked genuinely offended. Cassian remained completely committed to his decision.

The nickname immediately caught his attention. He bounced excitedly in place.
I picked him up carefully. Within seconds, he settled comfortably against my shoulder
Amorah stared at us. Her expression made me laugh again.
“I carried him for nine months,”

Cassian ignored that statement completely. He seemed perfectly happy where he was.
“This feels personal, Amorah added.
I tried not to smile. Unfortunately, I failed.
The situation only became worse later that afternoon. Conrad stopped by the nursery and attempted to take Cassian from
Cassian protested immediately. The reaction surprised all three of us.
“Did he just reject me?” Conrad asked.
“It appears so.”
Conrad looked horrified. I suspected he was exaggerating.
Amorah entered the room at exactly the wrong moment. The sight of Conrad being rejected immediately improved her mood.
“This is the best thing I’ve seen all week.”
Conrad pointed accusingly at Cassian. Cassian responded by grabbing my shirt and refusing to let go.
The story spread through the estate quickly. By evening, everyone knew Cassian had apparently chosen a favorite person.
Kyra found the situation hilarious.
“You bribed him.”
I nearly choked on my drink. “What?”
“You definitely bribed him.”
“With what?”
Kyra thought about that for several seconds. Then she shrugged. “Baby things.”
That answer somehow explained nothing. It also failed to convince anyone.

“Maybe he just has terrible judgment.”
Kyra immediately laughed. I threw a cushion at him.
“You two are awful.”
“You’re his favorite,” Kyra replied.
“You’ll survive.

Over the next several days, the pattern continued. No matter who held him first, he eventually reached for me.
At first, I assumed it was a coincidence. Then it happened again.
Even Conrad eventually accepted reality. “I don’t understand it.”
Neither did I. Cassian simply seemed determined.

The attachment created strange moments throughout the week. Several times, I entered a room only to discover someone already holding him.
Seconds later, he would stretch both arms toward me.
One afternoon, Bethany witnessed the phenomenon firsthand. She looked almost as surprised as everyone else.
“He really does prefer you.”
I nodded carefully. Conversations with Bethany remained uncomfortable.
She stayed at the estate because Conrad believed she still possessed useful information about Holmes’ former contacts. Nobody pretended otherwise.
Bethany looked away first. That happened more often these days.
“I guess babies don’t hold grudges.”
I did not respond. The comment felt too complicated.
Later that evening, I found Amorah alone in the kitchen. Cassian had finally fallen asleep after an unusually active day.
“He likes you.”
The statement caught me off guard. Ainorah rarely spoke so directly.
“I noticed.”
Her expression remained thoughtful. She seemed to be choosing her words carefully.
“You’re good with him.”
I looked down at the counter. Compliments from Amorah still felt strange.

The silence that followed was not uncomfortable. That alone felt like progress.
For a moment, I thought the conversation was over. Then Amorah surprised me.
“I still remember everything.”
The words landed heavily between us.
“I know.”
She studied me quietly. There was no anger in her expression.
“I don’t trust easily.”
“I know that too.”
