Chapter 43
AMORAH
I did not leave the corridor immediately after the report, and neither did Conrad.
I turned away from Conrad and walked a few steps, giving myself space to think.
“I underestimated her,” I admitted.
Conrad did not respond right away.
“She stayed quiet for too long,” I continued. “I thought she was reacting to Holmes, not acting on her own.”
“That assumption no longer applies,” he said.
“No.” I answered. “It doesn’t.”
I faced him again, my thoughts already moving ahead.

“I need eyes inside Silvercrest,” I stated. “Not just general reports. I need someone who can move close enough to see what she’s doing in real time.”
“That can be arranged,” Conrad said.
“I don’t need just loyalty,” I added. “I need someone who can blend in without drawing attention.”
“You’ll have both.”
I held his attention for a moment, then nodded.
“I want daily updates,” I insisted. “No delays. No gaps.”
“You’ll get them.”
He turned slightly toward the sentinel still waiting nearby.
“Assign one of ours,” he said. “Someone who can pass unnoticed within Silvercrest’s structure.”
“Yes, Alpha King,” the sentinel replied.
“And prepare a secure communication channel,” Conrad added. “Direct access, no intermediaries.”
The sentinel nodded and left without another word.
I exhaled slowly, my focus settling into something clearer now.
“This changes the approach,” I noted.
“It does,” Conrad replied.
“I was planning around Holmes,” I continued. “Now I need to plan around her.”
“And both of them,” he added.
“Yes.”
I looked down at the parchment in my hand, then folded it again.

“She’s limiting access to the twins.” I observed. “That means she knows they’re central to everything.”
“And she’s making sure no one else gets close enough to confirm anything.” Conrad said.
“Exactly
I walked past him. heading toward the inner section of the territory where his strategists usually worked.
“I need to see the full layout.” I requested. “Movements, patrol changes, anything that’s shifted since I left.”
“You’ll have it.”
We moved through the corridors without speaking after that.
By the time we reached the strategy room, one of his wolves was already waiting. Maps were laid out across the central table, marked with routes and territory divisions. I stepped closer without hesitation, my attention moving over the details.
“This is Silvercrest’s outer patrol structure,” the wolf said.
“What about internal movement,” I asked.
He adjusted one of the markings. “This is based on previous patterns.”
“That’s outdated,” I stated. “Everything changed when she stepped in.”
He paused, then nodded slightly. “Then we’ll need updated reports.”
“You’ll have them by tonight,” Conrad said from behind me.
I glanced at him briefly, then returned my focus to the table.
“Bethany is not acting randomly,” I stated. “She’s making specific adjustments.”
“What kind,” the strategist asked.
“She’s narrowing access,” I explained. “That means she’s identifying who matters and who doesn’t.”
I pointed to a section of the map.
“These areas used to be open to mid–level ranks.” I explained. “If she’s restricting them, she’s cutting off communication.”
“And isolating certain groups,” the strategist added.
Yes.”
I moved my hand to another section.
“She’s also shifting patrols,” I continued. “Not to defend the territory, but to monitor movement within it.”
“That’s internal control,” he said.
“It’s more than that,” I countered. “It’s preparation.”
“For what,” he asked.
*For something she doesn’t want interrupted.”
The room fell quiet for a moment.

“What about Holmes,” the strategist asked.

“He’s still making the public moves,” I stated. “Calling council reviews, pushing accusations.”
“And she’s handling everything behind that,” he said.
Yes.
Conrad stepped closer to the table.
“She’s building something separate,” he said.
“That’s what it looks like.” I replied.
We continued going over the map, adjusting markers as new information was added.
By evening, the assigned spy arrived.
He did not come through the main entrance, and his presence was only known to a few. Conrad had arranged for him to be brought directly to a smaller room within the inner section, away from the rest of the pack.
I entered the room shortly after.
He stood when I walked in, lowering his head slightly.
“Amorah,” he said.
“You’ve been inside Silvercrest before,” I noted.
“Yes.”
“Then you know how to move without being noticed.”
“I do.”
I stepped closer, studying him briefly.
“You’ll be reporting directly to me,” I instructed. “No delays. No missed details.”
“I understand.”
I handed him a small device.
“This records everything.” I explained. “Conversations, movements, anything that matters.”
He took it carefully.
“And this,” I added, handing him another piece. “This is for communication. You report through this channel only.”
“Yes”
“You don’t act unless I tell you to,” I continued. “You observe. That’s all.”
“I won’t interfere.”
I nodded once.
“Co,” I ordered.

He left without another word.
By the time night settled, the first report came in.
I sat with Conrad and his strategist as the information was relayed.

“Bethany is issuing direct orders,” the spy’s voice came through. “She has taken over access control within the inner grounds.”
I leaned forward slightly.
“Clarify.” I requested.
“No one approaches the twins without her approval,” he continued. “Even high–ranking wolves are being turned away.”
“What about Holmes,” I asked.
“He is present, but not directing this,” the spy replied. “The orders are coming from her.”
I exchanged a glance with Conrad.
“She’s not waiting for his authority.” I observed.
“No.” Conrad replied.
The report continued.
“She has reassigned guards,” the spy said. “Most of them are loyal to her personally.”
“That’s not normal,” the strategist said.
“No,” I agreed. “That’s deliberate.”
“She has also restricted discussion about the failed rite,” the spy added. “Anyone who brings it up is silenced.”
“How,” I asked
“Reassignment, isolation, or direct warning.”
I leaned back slightly, processing that.
“She’s closing every path that leads to the truth,” I stated.
“And replacing it with her own structure,” Conrad added.
The report ended shortly after that.
We sat in silence for a moment.
“She’s building her own system inside the pack,” I concluded. “One that doesn’t rely on Holmes.”
“And one that can function without him,” Conrad said.
“Yes.”
I looked at the map again, then at the strategist.
“Mark every change.” I instructed. “Every shift in patrol, every restriction.”

He nodded and began updating the layout.
At one point, another wolf in the room let out a quiet breath.
“This is too much thinking.” he said. “I’d rather face an opponent directly than keep track of all this.”
The comment caught me off guard. For a second, the tension in the room eased slightly.
“It’s not that simple,” the strategist replied.
“I know.” the wolf said. “But at least in a fight, you know who you’re dealing with.”
“That’s exactly the problem here,” I noted. “We don’t.”
He gave a short nod. “I see that now.”
The moment passed quickly, and the room returned to focus.
We continued working through the details, building a clearer picture of what was happening.
The more we uncovered, the more consistent the pattern became.
Bethany was not reacting.
She was planning.

She had taken control of access, communication, and movement. She had isolated the twins and limited who could speak about anything that challenged her position.
Later, when the room had cleared, Conrad remained.
