I stood inside Conrad’s strategy room, my attention fixed on the map spread across the table as the latest markings were adjusted.
I had been going over the changes again when the doors opened without warning.
Two sentinels dragged a wolf inside.
His condition told me everything before anyone spoke. His arms were bound, his movements restricted, and his posture showed resistance even as he was forced forward. The moment he was pushed to his knees, I knew this was not random
“He was intercepted near the border,” one of the sentinels said.
I stepped closer, studying the wolf more carefully.
“From Silvercrest,” .
“Yes,” Conrad replied from behind me.
I turned slightly as Conrad entered fully into the room, his presence settling into place without effort. He did not rush, and he did not raise his voice.
“He wasn’t just moving through,” Conrad continued. “He was carrying something.”
One of the sentinels stepped forward and placed a small wrapped item on the table.
I reached for it before anyone else did, unwrapping it carefully.
Inside were folded pieces of parchment, marked in a way that was not immediately readable. The symbols were arranged in
a pattern that looked structured, not random, and I recognized enough to know it was not meant to be obvious.
“This isn’t standard communication,”
“No,” Conrad replied. “It’s coded.”
I looked back at the rogue.
“Who gave you this,” I asked.
He did not answer.
His jaw tightened, and his attention dropped to the ground.
I stepped closer.
“You were caught carrying something you weren’t meant to lose,” “That already tells me you’re not just a runner.”
Still no response.
1 exhaled slowly, then stepped back.
Conrad moved forward.
“Look at me,” he said.

The rogue hesitated, then raised his head.
“You know where you are.” Conrad continued. “And you know what happens if you refuse to answer.”
The rogue swallowed, but he did not speak.
I watched closely.

There was resistance, but it was not blind. It was measured, like he was trying to decide how much he could hold back before it cost him more than he was willing to lose.
Conrad did not rush.
He stepped closer, stopping just in front of him.
“You’re not here by mistake,” Conrad said. “You were sent with purpose.”
The rogue remained silent.
“That purpose is tied to Bethany,” Conrad added.
There was a brief reaction.
Small, but noticeable.
I saw it.
“So that’s where your loyalty sits,”
The rogue clenched his jaw again.
“That’s enough,” Conrad said.
He stepped back slightly, and one of the sentinels moved forward.
There was no shouting, no drawn–out struggle. Pressure was applied in a way that was precise, direct, and effective,
The rogue resisted at first.
His body tensed, his breathing became uneven, but he held on.
Then it broke.
“I was given instructions,” he said, his voice strained.
“What instructions,” I asked.
“To deliver the message and confirm movement,” he replied.
“What movement?”
He hesitated.
The sentinel stepped closer again.
“I’ll talk,” the rogue said quickly.
I watched him closely.

“Bethany has been moving people,” he continued.
My attention sharpened immediately.
“Who,” I asked.
“Anyone connected to the rite.,” he said. “Witnesses, servants, lower–ranking wolves.”
I felt something settle in my chest.
“Not just witnesses,” I repeated.
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“She’s not just silencing them. She’s removing them entirely.”
“Yes.”
I turned slightly, glancing at Conrad.
“That means she’s cleaning everything“. “Not just the parts that can speak.”
“And replacing them,” Conrad added.
“Yes”
I looked back at the rogue.
“Where are they being taken,” I asked.
“I don’t know all the locations,” he said. “Only the routes.”
“That’s enough”
I picked up the coded parchment again.
“This is tied to those movements,”
“Yes.”
I handed it to Conrad.
“Then we’re not dealing with isolated actions,” I continued. “This is organized.”
“It is,” Conrad replied.
I stepped back, my thoughts aligning quickly.
“She’s preparing for something larger,“.
The room remained silent as that settled in.
“If we stay here and keep watching, we’ll always be behind her,” I added.
No one argued with that. I looked at Conrad.
“We don’t wait,“.

His attention fixed on me fully.
“We intercept the next transfer.” I continued. “We take control of the route before she completes it.”
There was no hesitation in my voice. This was not a suggestion.
It was a decision.
Conrad watched me for a moment longer.
Then he nodded once.
“Agreed.” he said.
That answer came too easily.
I noticed it
“You were already considering it.” .
“Yes.”
“You were waiting”
“For you to reach it.”
I held his attention for a second, then looked away.
“That’s fine.“. “Now we move.”
I turned back to the rogue.
“You’re going to tell us where the next transfer is,”
He hesitated again.
The sentinel stepped forward slightly.
“It’s tonight,” the rogue said quickly.
My chest tightened.
“Location,”
He swallowed.
“Eastern route,” he replied. “Near the outer forest line.”
