The thought came without hesitation, and this time I did not question it. The risk was there, clear and present, but doing nothing meant letting her complete something that could not be undone. I stepped forward, steady despite the tension tightening through my chest.

I’m ending this,I said.

Conrad moved at the same time. He did not ask what I meant, and he did not hesitate. He stepped into place beside me his presence firm and unyielding, and for the first time since we had entered Silvercrest, we acted without needing to speak The alignment between us settled instantly.

I felt it as the energy in the room surged again, reacting not just to the rite, but to us stepping directly into it. It did not settle or adjust. It resisted.

Don’t,Holmes said sharply.

He moved toward us, but the elders blocked his path again, forming a barrier that forced him to stop.

You’ve done enough,” one of them said.

This is not your decision,Holmes snapped.

It stopped being yours when you lost control of it,the elder replied.

Holmes’s attention shifted, frustration clear now, but he did not break through them. Bethany stepped forward instead.

Move away,she said.

Her tone was calm, but there was urgency beneath it now, something tighter than before.

You don’t understand what you’re interfering with.

I understand enough,I replied.

I stepped into the center. The moment my foot crossed the boundary of the formation, the energy reacted sharply. It pushed back immediately, uneven and unstable, as if trying to force me out. I didn’t step back.

Conrad followed without hesitation, stepping in beside me. The reaction doubled. The structure of the rite strained, the alignment breaking further as the energy tried to adjust to something it was never meant to contain. The air grew heavier, not with pressure, but with resistance.

This will collapse,Conrad said.

I know.I replied.

Behind us, the witnesses moved back, instinct driving them away from the center. The elders held their ground, though even they shifted slightly, aware that what was happening was no longer controlled.

Stop this,” Bethany said.

This time, her voice carried something sharper, something closer to warning.

You don’t know what you’re doing.

I know what you’re trying to doI said.

Chapter 50

That’s not enough.

It is.

The energy surged again, stronger than before. It no longer built cleanly. It pulled from every direction, trying to complete the structure while we stood inside it, disrupting every line it needed to hold together.

Kyra moved closer to me, her unease clear.

I don’t like this,she said.

It’s not supposed to feel right,I replied.

Zane stepped in beside her, his focus no longer uncertain.

What do we do?he asked.

Stay where you are,I said.

Conrad’s presence remained steady beside me, unshaken.

We end it here,he said.

Yes.

Holmes tried again, his voice cutting through the rising instability.

If this breaks, you won’t be able to control the result.

That was never your concern before,I replied.

He did not answer, because he couldn’t. Bethany stepped closer, her composure still intact, but her attention sharper now. You’re making a mistake, she said.

No.I replied. You did.

The energy reacted again, but this time it did not surge upward. It collapsed inward. It started slowly, the outer edges of the formation folding in unevenly, pulling toward the center in a way that did not match the structure it was supposed to follow.

The imbalance spread quickly, breaking the lines that held it together.

This is not stabilizing, one of the elders said.

It’s not supposed to,Conrad replied.

The collapse accelerated. The energy twisted against itself, no longer forming a single direction, but splitting, clashing, and forcing everything in the center to react at once. The air shifted violently, and for a moment, the ground beneath us felt unsteady.

Kyra grabbed my arm.

What’s happening?she said.

It’s breaking.I answered.

Zane stepped closer to her, his stance firm now.

Stay with me,he said.

Holmes forced his way forward then, breaking past the elders.

Move them out.he said.

They don’t leave.” Bethany replied.

That stopped him. He turned to her, his expression shifting.

You can’t let this continue.

I already have,she answered.

The energy collapsed again, harder this time. The center of the formation broke completely, the structure unable to hold itself together any longer. The force pushed outward, then pulled back in, uneven and unstable, as if trying to decide whether to complete or fail.

I held my ground. Conrad did the same. The connection between us tightened, not pulling, but anchoring us in place as everything around us shifted.

This ends now,

The final collapse came without warning. It did not build. It broke. The energy folded in on itself completely, the structure of the rite tearing apart in a way that left nothing intact.

The force spread across the room, pushing everyone back and breaking the last of the alignment Bethany had tried to hold. Then it stopped. Not gradually but all at once.
