The space around us changed as soon as Conrad gave the order, his wolves moving into action without hesitation as word spread to the inner circle.

I stayed where I was for a moment, watching the shift from the fight into something more organized, and it became clear that this was not confusion or panic.

It was preparation.

Conrad turned slightly toward me, his attention settling on me even as the others moved around us. He looked calm, but there was intent in the way he stood, like he had already decided what needed to be done.

“They don’t stay here,” he stated.

I understood immediately he was talking about the twins.

“I agree,” I replied, glancing at Zane and Kyra where they stood close to me.

Kyra’s hand rested lightly against my arm, her fingers not gripping but not letting go either. Zane stood on my other side, his posture straight even though the strain still showed in the way he carried himself.

“They won’t be safe out here,” I continued.

“They won’t remain here,” Conrad answered.

That was enough to tell me he already had a place in mind.

“Where?” I asked.

He looked briefly toward the wolves approaching us before/returning his attention to me.

“The inner grounds,” he replied. “Restricted access.”

I nodded once, accepting it without hesitation.

“No one from outside can reach them there?” I asked.

“No one without going through me,” he answered.

There was no doubt in his voice, and that was enough for me.

“That’s what we need,” I said.

Zane shifted slightly beside me, his attention moving between Conrad and me.

“We’re not being hidden.” he stated.

I turned to him, keeping my tone even.

“You’re being protected,” I corrected.

“That sounds the same,” he replied.

Hit Conrad out in, his voice calm but firm. “You stay where you can be defended, not where you can be taken.”

Zane held his position for a moment, then let out a slow breath.

“I don’t like it,” he admitted.

“You don’t have to like it,” I replied. “You just have to stay alive.”

Kyra’s grip on my arm tightened slightly, and when she spoke, her voice was quieter.

“She’ll come for us again,” she said.

“Yes,” I answered.

“And this time, she won’t fail,” she added.

I met her eyes directly, not avoiding what she was saying.

“Then we make sure she doesn’t get the chance,” I replied.

Conrad stepped forward then, closing the small space between us and the twins. His presence changed the mood immediately, making everything feel more fixed and clear.

“You’ll be guarded at all times,” he said. “You move only with permission.”

Zane frowned slightly.

“That’s not living,” he muttered.

“It’s surviving,” Conrad replied.

Zane did not argue again, but his silence did not mean agreement. It meant he understood the situation.

Footsteps approached, and several of Conrad’s wolves stepped forward, stopping a few paces away as they waited for instruction. The inner circle had gathered, each of them focused and ready.

Conrad did not delay.

“Escort them to the inner grounds,” he ordered. “Full rotation. No gaps

One of the wolves stepped forward and lowered his head.

“Yes, Alpha King.”

The title settled into the space without being repeated.

Zane’s expression changed slightly, while Kyra’s grip on my arm loosened as she looked toward Conrad with new awareness.

I noticed it, and from the slight shift in his stance, I knew he had too.

Neither of us spoke about it.

I turned back to the twins, easing my tone slightly.

“You’ll be safe there.” I said.

Kyra nodded, though her eyes stayed on mine.

Will you come with us?” she asked.

The question held for a moment.

Before I could answer, Conrad spoke.”

“She has work to finish,” he said.

Kyra’s shoulders dropped slightly, but she did not argue.

I reached out and placed my hand briefly on her shoulder.

“I’ll come to you,” I assured her.

That seemed to settle it.

Zane gave a short nod.

“We’ll wait,” he said.

The wolves moved in around them, forming a protective line that did not crowd them but made the intent clear. Their movements were clean and direct, leaving no doubt that the twins were now under full protection.

As they started to move, Kyra looked back once, her gaze lingering on me before she turned forward again. Zane did not look back, but his posture told me he was still aware of everything behind him.

I watched them until they were out of sight.

Only then did I breathe out fully

“They’ll be safe,” Conrad said beside me.

I nodded, my eyes still on the path they had taken.

“They need to be,” I replied.

“They will be,” he said.

There was something in the way he spoke that made me turn toward him.

He stood close, not touching, but near enough that I could feel his presence clearly. It was not as intense as before, but it was there, steady and hard to ignore.

“You’re certain,” I said.

“Yes,” he answered.

“You’re taking this personally,” I observed.

His expression did not change much, but his stance shifted slightly.

“They are under my protection now,” he replied.
