AMORAH
The report did not change the way Conrad moved, but it changed the atmosphere around us. His wolves adjusted quickly, tightening positions and reinforcing routes without waiting for repeated instruction.
I remained beside him, watching how discipline held everything in place even as pressure built from the outside.
He did not rush into action, and that alone set him apart from what I had known before. Instead of reacting to Bethany’s move, he strengthened every point she might try to reach. It was not hesitation, it was preparation, and I understood the difference as I stood there with him.
“We’re not responding yet,” I noted, turning slightly toward him.
“Not yet,” he replied, his voice calm as his eyes moved across the territory.
I studied his posture, the way nothing about him suggested uncertainty.
“You’re waiting for her to push further,” I continued.
“I’m making sure when she does, it ends in one move,” he answered.
That settled into me more deeply than I expected.
I shifted my weight slightly, letting my arms rest loosely as I looked out over the grounds again. The tension from earlier had not disappeared, but it had changed into something more controlled, something that did not feel like it would break under pressure.
“You’re confident she will act again,” I said.
“She has already committed to it,” he replied.
I nodded slowly, accepting that.
“She won’t stop at testing,” I added.
“No,” he answered. “She’ll try to force an opening.”
“And if she finds one?” I asked.
“She won’t,” he replied.
There was no hesitation in his voice, and I found myself believing it without questioning him.
A quiet moment settled between us, not empty, but filled with everything we had not spoken. I became aware of how close we were standing again, the space between us smaller than it needed to be, but neither of us stepped away.
I exhaled slowly, letting some of the tension leave my shoulders.
“The twins are secure,” I said, more to ground myself than to inform him.
“They are,” he replied.
“They asked about me,” I added, glancing briefly in the direction of the safe house.

“They’re holding on better than expected.” I said.
“They were forced to,” he replied.
That was true, even if I did not like it.
“They shouldn’t have had to,” I said quietly.
“No,” he agreed. “But they did, and they’re still here.”
I looked down for a moment, letting that settle before lifting my head again.
“This isn’t over,” I said.
“No,” ne replied.
“And it won’t be simple,” I added.
“It never is,” he answered.
The conversation slowed, not because we had run out of things to say, but because we both understood what came next without needing to speak every detail.
I turned slightly toward him, studying his expression more carefully this time. There was no strain in it, no sign that he was carrying doubt, and that steadiness began to affect me in a way I had not expected.
“You’re not concerned,” I said.
“I am aware,” he replied.
“That’s not the same thing,” I answered.
“It is when concern does not change the outcome,” he said.
I held his attention for a moment, considering that.
“You don’t allow it to affect how you act,” I observed.
“No,” he replied.
I nodded once, then let out a quiet breath.
“I’m still adjusting to that,” I admitted.
His gaze softened slightly, though his posture remained the same.
“You don’t need to match it,” he said. “You need to understand it.”
I looked at him more directly.
“And once I do?” I asked.

You’ll know when to act and when to wait,” he answered.
There was something in the way he said it that made me pause.
“You’re teaching me,” I said.
“I’m making sure you’re not left unprepared.” he replied.
I crossed my arms lightly, but there was less tension in the movement now.
“I’m not used to that,” I admitted.
“I know,” he answered.
The honesty in that response stayed with me for a moment.
I shifted my stance again, grounding myself before speaking.
“I trust you to handle what I can’t reach right now,” I said.
He did not respond immediately, but his attention settled fully on me.

“You don’t say that lightly,” he noted.
“No,” I replied.

A brief pause followed, and the air between us changed again, quieter but heavier in a way that did not feel uncomfortable.
“You won’t have to carry this alone,” he said.
I studied him, searching for anything uncertain in his expression, but there was nothing.
“You’re sure of that,” I said.
“I am,” he answered.
I let that settle, feeling something in my chest ease slightly without fully understanding why.
Footsteps approached from behind, but slower this time, less urgent than before. One of his wolves stopped at a respectful distance, lowering his head slightly before speaking.
“Alpha King,” he began. “The safe house has been reinforced.”
Conrad turned his attention toward him.
“Details,” he instructed.
“Additional guards have been placed,” the wolf replied. “Access points have been reduced further, and no one has approached since the last report.”
I nodded slightly at that.
“They’re fully secured,” I said.
“They are,” the wolf confirmed.

onrad gave a short nod.
“Maintain position,” he ordered.
The wolf stepped back immediately, leaving us alone again.
I let out a quiet breath, my shoulders easing just enough to feel the shift.
