Chapter 62
AMORAH
The report did not sit idle for long. Conrad moved the moment it was delivered, his attention narrowing as he turned toward the inner grounds.
His wolves responded without delay, adjusting their positions and moving with purpose as new instructions were passed through the ranks.
I stayed close, watching how quickly order replaced uncertainty, and it became clear that this level of readiness was not forced, it was expected.
He did not raise his voice, but every command carried enough authority to be followed immediately. Guards were reassigned, patrol routes were expanded, and the outer boundary was reinforced in a way that left no gaps. I watched it all without interrupting at first, taking in the structure and how each movement connected to the next.
“This is routine for you,” I noted, turning slightly toward him as the activity continued around us.
“It is necessary,” he replied, his tone even as his attention moved between the wolves carrying out his orders.
I folded my arms lightly, studying the way everything was unfolding.
“You don’t wait for confirmation before acting,” I added.
“No,” he answered. “Waiting gives them time to decide the next move.”
I nodded, understanding the reason behind it.
“And you assume they will act again,” I continued.
“They already have,” he replied.
That settled the point without needing more explanation.
We moved toward the outer section of the inner grounds, where the land opened enough to give a clear view of the surrounding territory. The guards stationed there stepped aside as we approached, their posture straightening withou breaking formation.
I stepped forward slightly, looking out over the boundary lines.

“How far does your control extend?” I asked.
Conrad came to stand beside me, close enough that I could feel his presence without him touching me.
“Far enough that nothing enters without being seen,” he replied.
“And if something does?” I pressed.
“It does not leave,” he answered.
I let out a quiet breath, taking that in.
“You’ve built this for more than defense,” I said.
“For stability,” he replied.

glanced at him briefly before looking forward again.
“That’s not the same thing.” I pointed out.
“It is when you’re responsible for more than one territory,” he answered.
That caught my attention.
“You don’t just oversee this pack,” I said.
“No,” he replied.
I turned fully toward him now, searching his expression for confirmation.
“How many?” I asked.
“Enough that failure in one affects the others,” he answered.
That explained more than I expected.
“And Silvercrest?” I asked.
“It’s within reach,” he replied.
I held his gaze for a moment before looking away again.
“Then Bethany isn’t just testing this territory,” I said. “She’s testing you.”
“She is,” he agreed.
“And you’re letting her?” I asked.
His expression remained calm, but there was a firmness in the way he stood.
“I’m allowing her to show her intent,” he replied.
I considered that carefully.
“And when she does?” I continued.
“She’ll face the response she’s asking for,” he answered.
There was no hesitation in his voice, and it settled something in me.
A guard approached then, stopping a short distance away before speaking.
“Alpha King,” he began. “The twins are secure. No disturbances.”
I turned slightly toward him.
“They’ve settled?” I asked.
“They’re stable,” he replied. “They asked about you.”
That made my chest tighten briefly, but I kept my expression even.

The guard nodded before stepping back, returning to his position without further delay.
I looked forward again, letting that update settle.
“They’re still adjusting,” I said.
“They will,” Conrad replied.
“They’re stronger than they should have to be,” I added.
“They survived,” he answered.
I glanced at him briefly.
“That doesn’t make it easier,” I said.
“No,” he replied. “But it keeps them alive.”
I shifted my stance slightly, grounding myself before continuing.
“That must make things easier,” I added.
“It makes them clear,” he replied.
I nodded slowly, understanding that difference.
“Clear isn’t always easy,” I said.
“No,” he agreed. “But it’s necessary.”
Our conversation slowed, not ending, but changing direction. I became aware of how long we had been standing there, how natural the exchange had become without either of us forcing it.
“You’re involving me more,” I noted.
“You’re part of this,” he replied.
“That wasn’t always the plan,” I said.
“No.” he admitted.
I held his gaze for a moment longer.

and now?” asked
“Now it is” he answered.
The honesty in that response settled between us, quiet but firm. I did not push further, but I did not step away either.
Footsteps approached from behind, breaking the moment before it could stretch any further. One of his patrol wolves moved into view, his pace quick but controlled as he stopped a few steps away.
“Alpha King,” he began. “The patrol has returned.”
Conrad turned slightly toward him.
“Report,” he instructed.
The wolf straightened as he spoke.
“The wolves at the boundary were not random,” he said. “They carried markings tied to Silvercrest.”
My jaw tightened at that.
“They didn’t try to hide it,” I said.
“No,” the wolf replied. “It was deliberate.”
Conrad’s expression did not change, but his attention focused completely.
“They wanted to be seen,” I added.
“Yes,” the wolf confirmed.
I looked back at Conrad.
“She’s not just testing,” I said. “She’s sending a message.”
His gaze met mine, “And we’ve received it,” he replied.
