CONRAD
The news of Amorah’s pregnancy spread through Alpha channels faster than I expected, and by morning, halt the comet had already shifted positions.
Wolves who hesitated during Holmes‘ succession push suddenly began requesting private discussions estrid of outing my territory.
I stood near the long conference table inside the strategy hall while Damien handed me another stack of council wonen. The expressions on the faces around me told me enough before I even opened them.
“They’re changing direction already,” Damien muttered. “The older bloodline factions are reconsidering the spe

it.”
None of the wolves around me argued with that statement. The possibility of an heir changed everything legally politically and socially within pack leadership.
An unmated Supreme Alpha could be challenged. A Supreme Alpha with a confirmed heir became far more difficult to remove without destabilizing the hierarchy itself.
That was exactly why Holmes would become more dangerous now.
I dismissed the meeting after assigning additional patrol routes around the territory. The moment the room cleared, my attention shifted immediately toward Amorah.
I found her inside the secondary office beside my private chamber, sitting with several intelligence reports spread across desk. Her focus stayed on the papers even after I entered, though I noticed the slight exhaustion around her eyes immediately.
“You skipped breakfast again,” I remarked as I crossed the room.
Amorah leaned back slightly in her chair and rubbed one hand against her temple. “The reports from the eastern rites came in late.”
I placed a tray beside her before pulling one of the documents closer You still need to eat.”
Her eyes lifted toward me slowly. “You’ve repeated that sentence six times since yesterday.”
“And you ignored it all six times.”
A faint smile touched her mouth before she finally reached for the food. Watching her relax slightly while eating something inside me that I had stopped trying to explain.
The silence between us no longer felt strained. It felt familiar.
Amorah finished reading another report before sliding it toward me across the desk. Two of Bethany sold bar were active again three nights ago.”
I scanned the information quickly. “Duskveil involvement?”
“Indirectly,” she replied. “The transfers passed through neutral trade accounts first.

Hooked back at her carefully. “You’ve been reviewing these records all night.”
“She’s rebuilding support.” Amorah answered quietly. “Bethany doesn’t move randomly, Conrad.”
I studied her face for several seconds before speaking again. “You’re starting to think like my intelligence wolves.”
“That should concern you.”
“It actually makes my job easier.”
She rolled her eyes softly at that, though the tiredness around her expression remained. I stepped closer before resting one hand against the back of her chair.
“You need rest.” I told her.
Amorah tilted her head slightly. “You say that while running on less sleep than I am.”
“That isn’t your concern.”
“It became my concern a long time ago.”
The words settled heavily between us. Neither of us looked away immediately.
A knock interrupted the moment before Damien entered without waiting for permission. His gaze shifted briefly between us before returning to business.
“Holmes submitted another request to the council this morning,” Damien reported. “He’s demanding the succession hearing be moved forward.”
My expression hardened instantly. “How soon?”
“Within six weeks.”
Amorah sat straighter immediately. “He’s trying to force judgment before public support fully shifts.”
“He knows the pregnancy changes council opinions,” I replied. “Especially among older Alphas.”
Damien nodded once. “Several factions already started reconsidering alliances.”
I dismissed him after assigning additional security adjustments. Once the door shut again, Amorah stayed queer for several moments while processing the information.
“He’s getting desperate,” she murmured.
“Desperate wolves become reckless.”
Her gaze moved toward me carefully. “That makes me the easiest target now.”
I did not answer immediately because denying it would insult her intelligence. Amorah noticed the hesitation any

She watched me closely before finally exhaling. “You’re moving me into your quarters permanently.”
“It makes security easier.”
Amorah raised one eyebrow slowly. “Only security?”
I stepped closer to her chair before answering honestly. “No.”
The tension in her face softened slightly after that. She did not argue again.

Later that evening, the twins joined us for dinner inside my private quarters for the first time officially instead of temporarily. Zane immediately complained about the vegetables placed on his plate while Kyra ignored him completely. “You complain every night,” Kyra muttered while reaching for bread.
“That’s because they keep serving terrible food.”
Amorah hid a smile behind her glass. “You said the exact same thing yesterday before asking for seconds.”
Zane looked offended immediately. “That doesn’t prove anything.”
“It proves you’re dramatic,” Kyra replied.
I watched Amorah laugh quietly at their argument while helping Kyra cut part of her meal into smaller pieces. The sight affected me more deeply than I expected.
For several seconds, the room felt less like a political shelter and more like something dangerously close to peace. Kyra suddenly looked toward Amorah again. “If the baby is a girl, I should pick the name.”
Zane nearly choked on his drink. “Why would you decide that?
“Because your ideas are terrible.”
“You haven’t even heard my ideas yet.”
“That already makes them terrible.”
Amorah laughed harder this time before leaning back slightly in her chair. I reached toward her automatically when I noticed her discomfort, steadying her arm before she even asked for help.
