Beatrice looked at her and laughed. "Your Warren is a master manipulator. He has a handle on everything. If he tells you to let it go, why won't you listen?"
"I'm his mother! How can I just ignore it?"
"You really want to get involved? Then you have to suffer the headaches that come with it," Beatrice warned.
"Aren't I suffering enough already?"
"She's not actually an escort, so what are you stressing over?"
"That makes me worry even more. If she were a decent, innocent girl, why would he be afraid to bring her home?"
Beatrice pondered for a moment but decided to keep her mouth shut. If Warren was keeping Elena in the dark, it definitely wasn't anything good.
"Come on, my situation is much worse," Beatrice consoled her. "My son got married young, but it didn't do a bit of good. He goofs off all day, completely useless. If I obsessed over his behavior, I'd have lost my mind by now."
"And my Silas has been freezing me out for days."
"Warren wouldn't bear to freeze you out, would he?"
Elena scoffed, "You brought that on yourself."
Beatrice laughed in frustration. "Wow, even you're throwing me under the bus? Weren't you the one enjoying it?"
Elena said haughtily, "Warren said I'm not allowed to hang out with you anymore."
Beatrice roared with laughter. "Who does he think he is? Daring to interfere with our friendship? He's been married to you for thirty years, but we've known each other for over fifty! What did you tell him?"
Elena suppressed a smile. "I told him I couldn't stop you, that you insisted on hanging out with me."
"Hahaha..."
They had been like this since they were kids. Elena would be trying to do her homework, and Beatrice would force her to go play.
Beatrice suddenly remembered something important. "We need to take a trip back to Eastford in the next couple of days. Let's go together."
Their families were in-laws; the daughters of each family had married the other's sons, creating a tangled, overlapping web of relatives.
