Deidra’s P.O.V.

“As always, that was amazing Claire,” I said with a genuine smile on my face. “I’m going to gain so much weight on this vacay.”
Claire chuckled at that as she patted my hand. Brix squeezed my knee under the table, like a gentle reminder that he was still there. As if I needed the reminder. Being touched by him is like touching
a live–wire. But it’s also calming. It’s weird, I know.
“Thank you dear,” she said.
“Does your guardian not cook?” Birdie asked me. “Deb, right?”
I nodded.
“Birdie,” Brix scolded her before I could open my mouth.
“No, it’s okay,” I cut in before they could start bickering. “I get it. People have questions. Ask away,” I told Birdie, giving her a smile. “To answer your question though… no, Deb is not a good cook. We did a lot of pizza and frozen dinners after my parents died. Which is totally okay, but nothing beats
a home–cooked meal.”
“Well, I’m glad you like it, dear,” Claire said. “You’ll have to come over for Sunday brunch when we get home.”
“Oh, uh-”
“She will, Ma,” Brixton cut me off, squeezing my knee again. I turned to see him looking at his mom with a huge grin on his face. “I’ll tie her up and gag Her if I gotta Momma. She’ll be there.”
My jaw dropped as Adam and Cobra snorted.
“Oh, I’ll be there,” I grumbled, turning back to Claire. As your guest, but your son can f***k right off.
We are not showing up together.”
“You can bring Waylen with you,” Claire said, adding fuel to the fire I’d just started.
“As a matter of fact, if Jinx makes you uncomfortable, Deidra, we can just make him eat at the kids‘ table,” Cobra added, making Birdie and Adam bust out laughing.
Brix gave them all bored looks before turning that look on me.
“You’re gonna make me eat at the kids‘ table?” he grumbled.
“If you don’t behave like a good little boy, then yeah, I told him, feeling pleased with myself.

Until he leaned in to whisper in my ear, that is.
“That praising sh.it works both ways, Lotus,” he whispered. “I’ll be a good boy if it means getting something from you any day.”
I whipped my head at him, frowning as heat bloomed inside me. Brix just smirked at me, that se.xy smirk. I rolled my eyes at him, trying to hide how he made me feel. Although, by the low chuckle I
heard from him, I doubted I did.
“I’m going to go put Waylen to bed,” he said before kissing the side of my head and standing up.
Adam went to get his two boys and Cobra took baby Rosie into the other room to rock her to sleep. I thought that was so adorable. Cobra looks like what you’d picture a bada.ss biker to look, and seeing him be so gentle with a baby was so cute. I stood up to help clean up, feeling like it was
the least that I could do.
“Mom, go relax, you cooked,” Birdie said to her mother.
“Nonsense-”
“No, really,” I cut in. “We can finish up here.”
Reluctantly, Claire left the room, mumbling under her breath about how sweet we are. I must admit that this wasn’t what I pictured a biker family to be like. I already knew that Claire and Cobra were good people, but I guess I thought it would be a little different. I mean, after all the wild rumors! hear about how they like to party… Those are rumors, I believe. I just thought they’d be more…
chaotic I guess.
“What’s got you thinking so hard?” Birdie asked, pulling me from my thoughts.
I peeked at her as she handed me a plate to dry. I took it, trying to decide if I should be honest or not. I’m usually better at being honest. Sometimes, even brutally so. It’s kind of my thing.
“Uh, honestly… I was thinking about how I expected your family to be a bit more chaotic than they
are,” I told her.
Birdie snorted at that, thankfully not offended.
“You mean, you don’t think those three boys are chaotic?” She asked, handing me another plate.
“Oh, well, kids are different,” I replied. “That kind of chaos is happiness.”
“So, you were expecting something like the clubhouse parties?” she asked.
“Uh, kinda, I guess,” I said. “I’ve never been to one, but I hear a lot of crazy stuff. Naked girls, everyone acting wild, lots of drinking…”
Birdie snorted again.
“Those parties do get insane, but no, this is family–time,” she told me. “Mom and Dad are too old to

want to do that kind of partying all the time. The rest of us have kids. This was our family getaway.” She paused for a moment, giving me the side–eye. Plus, Jinx has never been that into partying
anyway.”
“Really?” I asked, clearly not believing her.
“Yeah, seriously,” she replied with a laugh. “I mean, we grew up around that. Jinx has been partying like that since he was a pre–teen. Don’t get me wrong, he likes it occasionally, but my brother is very motivated to give his son a good life. He always said he wanted stability for Waylen. It’s always felt like he was trying to prove something though.”
“Like that bikers can have real jobs?” I teased.
“Maybe,” she said, giving me another look that I pretended not to see. “I personally think he was trying to prove something to someone else though.
Oh no, is this the part when she-
“Deidra, can I be honest with you?” She asked, turning to face me.
“Sure,” I replied, sensing she was about to make my head even more confused when it came to her
brother.
“I know this… thing between you and my brother is fake, but… does it feel fake with you?” She asked. My eyes snapped to hers. I wasn’t sure how to answer, because the truth was that it all felt so real it was terrifying, and I didn’t know what to do with that. “Listen,” she continued when I hadn’t said anything. “I know that it’s not fake for Jinx. This is like a dream come true for him. A chance he’d been waiting years for. Trust me. And I like you a lot, Deidra. You’re so great with Waylen and you put Jinx in his place without a care about the club. You’re good for him, and from the looks of it… it seems like he’s good for you too…”
“I…” I trailed off before swallowing hard and trying again. “It doesn’t feel fake to me, but I don’t know what that means exactly,” I admitted. “It’s… scary. I mean, clearly I don’t have the best taste in men. And Jinx… he… we… it’s just…” I sighed, closing my eyes for a moment. “It doesn’t make sense to me, but I like it.” I whispered.
Birdie smiled at me.
“Don’t tell him I told you this, but…” She trailed off as she looked around to make sure we were still alone. “You remember when you were in the 8th grade and Jinx accidently spilled grape soda all over your new white dress?”
“Uh, yeah?” I replied, confused.
“Do you remember that was the week that all the guys were asking the girls to the 8th–grade dance?” she asked.

“Yeah, I remember,” I said, still confused.

“Do you remember that Jinx was holding something else when he approached you?” She asked.
I furrowed my brow as I looked at the floor, trying to remember. I remember Jinx passed me a note in the class before lunch saying that he wanted to talk to me. He called out my name when he approached me. I remember thinking that he looked so nervous. I thought that was because he was playing a prank on me. But I remember that he was holding a single daffodil that he plucked from outside the school and something else. A thick paper of some sort. But then he tripped and dumped the cup of grape soda he had all over me. just remember screaming at him until a few
adults came to break it up.
“I don’t understand Birdie,” I said honestly.
“He was going to ask you to the dance,” she whispered. “That was just the first of many shots that blew up in his face.”
Then she turned back to the dishes like we weren’t having a conversation at all. I was confused. I felt like she dropped a bomb on me. The first of many? Many? He was going to ask me to the
dance? And I… screamed at him like a lunatic. I remember the look on Brixton’s face too… He
didn’t even say anything, just stormed off very upset. I didn’t think about how he was feeling at all
at the time.
Now I can’t help but wonder how many times there were like that. I worked on autopilot while Birdie chattered away. My mind was going through every interaction I ever had with Brix. How
could I have it so wrong?
And what the hell do I do now?
