Chapter 48: Answers
Deidra’s P.O.V.
“You okay, Wisteria?” Brixton asked me once we were inside his bedroom. Alone. “You been quiet
since I put Waylen to bed. Birdie didn’t say anything weird to you, did she?”
I looked at him for a moment. We were in his room now. Brix was leaning against the dresser in the
corner of the room. His eyes were on me, waiting for me to respond as he crossed his arms over his massive chest. Who even gave him permission to look that good in his cut? The other guys don’t look half as good as Brixton does. Is that because I have feelings for him? I did always think
that he was so hot, but such an a.ss.
And apparently, I’ve had it so wrong all this time.
“Thorn?” Brix said expectantly when all I did was stare at him.
I couldn’t exactly say no, because the truth was, Birdie did say something weird. But now I wasn’t sure I wanted to bring it up. I had questions. Lots of them. I had planned to use this time to ask Brixton all of them. I wasn’t sure if he’d answer me, but I had to try. Now I’m not sure whether I want those answers. Because everything is becoming more and more real, and I don’t know how
to handle that.
I just got out of a long–term relationship. Pretty horribly too. I shouldn’t jump into another relationship so quickly. And I don’t want Brix to be a rebound. I don’t know what to do with these feelings though. Because a really big part of me wants to plunge into this and let it all happen. But I’ve never done anything like that before. Theo was the only risk I ever took, and look how that
turned out.
But this is Brixton Jinx Roth we’re talking about. Everything with him is different. And it’s scary but so exciting too. The longer I stick around, the more find out about him, about us and our past. I don’t know what to do about it. I don’t know if this risk is worth it. I just don’t know.
I feel things for Brixton that I never felt for Theo or anyone else. The more I find out, the more I realize that these feelings have been there for a very long time. Brix wasn’t the only one with secret feelings. I just… used my anger of all the bullsh.it bad luck to hide mine. Now… everything is
different.
“Zinnia?” Brix pushed gently, and I just couldn’t hold it in anymore.
“She told me that you tried to ask me to the 8th–grade dance,” I blurted.
Brixton’s cheeks and the tips of his ears burned pink. It was so adorable. He reached up to rub the back of his neck as he looked away. He was clearly embarrassed and trying to come up with some

excuse to tell me. I didn’t want excuses though. I wanted the truth. I think. I hope, because I’m taking the stupid risk.
I slowly started to close the space between us, waiting for him to reply.

“But then I spilled grape soda all over your new dress, and you tore me a new one,” he said with a forced laugh. “I felt so fu.cking bad.”
“Why didn’t you ever say anything?” I asked, one step away from him.
“You were so pi.ssed at me…” he trailed off, mumbling and still avoiding my eyes.
I moved until I was standing right in front of him. My hands rested on his abs. He was warm and smelled like cedar and leather and something all him. My body relaxed, and I let myself melt into
him. Finally, those stupid blue–green eyes met my hazel ones.
“I’m sorry that I overreacted,” I said gently. “I thought you did it on purpose.”
“I swear I didn’t,” he rushed out. “It was a stupid accident-”
“I know that now,” I cut him off, moving my hands slowly up his chest as we stared into each other’s eyes. “And now I can’t help but wonder… how many other times there were like that.”
“Can’t we wait until you’re madly in love with me before I answer that?” He blurted, staring into my
eyes like he was pleading with me.
I frowned at him.
“That’s not very fair,” I grumbled.
“It’s embarrassing the amount of times I’ve tried to ask you out, Thorn,” he mumbled. “I’m a bada.ss biker with a reputation. One that you could destroy if you knew the truth.”
That made me smile.
“Don’t you trust me?” I asked softly. “You expect me to trust you… Why can’t you just trust that I’ll keep your secrets?”
“Babe, please,” he groaned. “It’s going to make me sound like a pussy.”
“But I already think you’re a p****y,” I teased him.
“Wisteria…” he groaned again.
“It’ll help me believe you don’t just want me for Waylen,” I said.
“You’re not playing fair,” he grumbled with a frown.
“All’s fair in love and war, right?” I replied with a smile.
“I don’t want it to be war between us,” he blurted.

“Then tell me the truth,” I practically begged. “Please, Brixton… I’ve just… I’ve found out so much about you… about us… I need real answers.”
Brixton blew out a long breath.
“What is it exactly that you want to know, Tulip?” he asked, sounding defeated.
I stared into his eyes as I replied.
“Glory always singling me out… yelling and bullying me… that was because of you?” I asked.
“Yeah,” he replied.
“That time that I got my hair caught in your watch? Sophmore year?” I asked.
“I wanted to ask you to the summer fair…” he mumbled, his cheeks turning pink. It was so damn
adorable. Too adorable.
“The day my parents died?” I asked, tears filling my eyes, but I couldn’t stop now. “You knew where I was. You took me home. And you… disappeared after that. And What about Theo telling me that the club scared him off? A–and the wedding venue that was canceled? And the loan I got for Garden Sip… the club helped with that. That was all you?”
“Not exactly, Lilac,” he said gently. He looked away for a moment, blowing out a breath as he rubbed the back of his neck. When he looked at me again, he was serious. Completely serious, but with soft eyes. He grabbed my hands, holding them between us. “I was going to ask you out that day,” he finally admitted. “Had a whole thing planned after school for you. When I went to go look for you, I heard what happened with your parents. And then suddenly, nobody could find you. But I knew where you would be. There was only one place you would go to lose yourself.”
“You knew me that well back then?” I asked, confused. “We weren’t even friends.”
“I always paid attention to you,” he said. “Too much. Which was why Glory singled you out all the time. But after I found you that day… after you broke down like that with me… I didn’t know what to do, Deidra. I thought that I really was some kind of inx to you. Every time I tried to ask you out, every time that I thought it was the right moment, every time I tried to take a risk, you paid a price. I was going to leave you alone after that. I swear I was.”
“But?” I pushed, sniffling, trying not to let the tears fall.
“There was only one time after that,” he told me. “One more time that Birdie had talked me into it again. She made me feel like it was my last chance to take the risk. It was graduation day. I was on my way to you while you were taking pictures with Deb and Sophie. Glory stopped me. That was the day I found out that she was pregnant with Way en. I never thought you’d want me after that. A young, single dad with hella baggage? I thought that was it. I’d never have another chance with you again. So… I gave up.”

“You gave up, but you threatened the only man who ever showed interest in me?” I asked.
That made Brix roll his eyes.

“I threatened everyone who ever even looked at you, Thorn,” he said. “The whole town might have seen you as some orphan, but my brothers sure as hell didn’t. I had to warn them off. And yeah, so what if I threatened Theo? That p****y was never good enough for you. And I barely even threatened him. He saw my cut and got scared. All told him was to take you seriously or risk having trouble with me.”
I blinked at him, reeling from all of this.
“And the wedding venue? Garden Sip?” I asked.
Brix blew out a breath.
“War was going to give you the loan for Garden Sip, no matter what I felt for you,” he told me. “I actually only heard about it when he asked me and Feral to look over the plans. He needed our opinions that it was a good investment. And believe me babe, if it wasn’t, Feral and I wouldn’t have told him to go for it. I might have always felt like you were mine, but that doesn’t mean I was willing to put the club in debt if I didn’t truly believe in you.
“Well, that’s a relief,” I muttered.
“As for the wedding venue… I have no idea what you’re talking about, Sunflower,” he said.
I frowned at him.
“Deb found out that someone from the club called and canceled it, Brixton,” I stated.
“It wasn’t me, I swear,” he replied. “My brothers love you though. Could have been any of them just
trying to f***k with sh.it on your behalf. Probably Psych if I had to guess. You earned his respect,
which is hard as hell to do. He takes that sh.it to heart too.”
“How would he or any of them even know how much that place meant to me?” I asked.
“Maybe they didn’t,” he said with a shrug. “I can find out when we get back though. I’ll ask, baby,
they’ll tell me.”
“And you’ll tell me?” I asked, giving him a look that made him chuckle.
“Of course,” he replied. “Now that I have you… now that I’ve finally gotten this chance with you… I’ll
give you anything, Wisteria. And I am never letting you go.”
We really just… had awful timing. No wonder Brixton’s been laying it on so thick now. He feels like this is the opportunity he kept missing. And I was completely ignorant of the truth all this time. I made things a million times worse with my attitude because I thought he was always fu.cking with
