Chapter 234-

Chapter 231

Jacob’s tone was certain, eventhough he phrased it as a question.

Natalie responded with a soft mm, waiting for him to go on.

Jacob nodded. “Over twenty years ago. I went abroad…

He told Natalie about his connection with the Grant family. “Fate works in mysterious ways. If I hadn’t met Mr. Grant, I might never have met your grandmother.”

Now the Grant family needs my help. Even if it’s not a matter of life and death, I’d still feel obligated to step in ”

He looked at Natalie and smiled. “I’ve watched you grow up, taught you Go from scratch, and you’ve got such talent that n his old man can’t even keep up with you.”

The night breeze gently lifted Natalie’s hair. She looked at Jacob, her eyes soft. “Grandpa, you’re just joking. It’s really because you taught me so well.”

acob laughed even harder, not denying it. He patted the back of her hand. “Alright, alright, it’s all thanks to my teaching.”

His chest rose and fell. “I taught you since you were little to always pay back those who helped you. But I’ve been retired fo ges, and I’ve got one foot in the grave already. I don’t plan to step in myself.

I’ve rarely owed anyone in my life, and I don’t want to leave this favor unreturned when my time’s up. Mr. Grant is a ighteous man, and I believe the younger generation of the Grant family is just as honorable.

Would you do this for me, and return the favor on my behalf?”

acob looked at Natalie, and there was a gentle glimmer in his otherwise clouded eyes.

He rarely asked anyone for help or made decisions for others, but today, he was stepping up and making this call for Natali

t wasn’t that he couldn’t pay back the favor himself. It was because he knew the Grant family were the kind of people you d vant on your side.

Once he was gone, Natalie would lose another elder in her life. It never hurts to have more connections, more friends,

Even though she’d found her real parents, and he’d met them once, be thought it was a good thing for Natalie

But in the end, relying on yourself is always best. What others give you is never quite yours, but whatyou earn on your owit

eels real.

That way, when he finally meets his wife again, he can rest easy

Natalie looked at Jacob, saying nothing

She knew what Jacob was really thinking. It wasn’t just about paying back a favor for hum. He was also setting things up for

her down the road.

Another breeze swept by, making her eyes sting. A tear slipped down her cheek, but she quickly wiped it away with the back

of her hand

“Okay,” she said softly

Jacob kept his gaze fixed on the moon above, his smile soft and easy

Natalie stood up, pulled the thin blanket that had slipped off Jacob’s shoulders back up, and tucked it neatly around him

“Grandpa, the wind’s picking up. Let’s go inside,” she said.

Jacob waved her off. “Let’s stay a bit longer. The moon’s beautiful tonight.”

Natalie didn’t press him. She took a seat on the small stool beside him, quietly watching the moon with him.

The October moon shone brightly, hanging in the sky like a freshly polished silver coir

The courtyard was peaceful, with only the soft rustling of leaves in the breeze and the distant, occasional barking of a dog.

The next day at noon, Natalie and Henry headed back to Harbor City.

Blondie sent her a location, a black coffee shop. [Rosie’s here too. Wanna come hang out, Talia?]

Natalie didn’t have anything else going on, so she just went over.

Henry didn’t stick around. He dropped her off and left.

At the black coffee shop, Rosie looked pretty down, her eyes still puffy from crying yesterday.

Blondie had been pestering her all morning, refusing to take no for an answer until she finally agreed to come out.

Rosie sat across from Blondie, holding a cup of black coffee she’d only taken a couple of sips from. Tiny droplets of water had formed on the cup, slowly trickling down the sides.

Blondie glanced at her. Rosie was hunched over, poking at the sugar slice in her cup with her straw, mashing it up until the juice mixed into the coffee, turning it cloudy.

He’d known Rosie for so long, but this was a first for him. He’d never seen her like this.

She was always smiling, a bit silly and sweet, like she didn’t have a care in the world.

She was like a little ray of sunshine in winter, always bringing warmth wherever it was needed.

But today, she was curled up in the corner of the couch, looking just like a drenched kitten.

Blondie’s brows knit together, feeling bad for her. “Hey,”

He set his own black coffee down, took the mangled coffee from her hands, swapped u for a fresh one, stuck a straw in, and

shid it over to her

“If you keep poking like that, you’ll end up stabbing a hole right through the cup” he said

Rosie looked up at him, her eyes still swollen, with dark shadows underneath

She’d spent the whole night wide awake, tossing and turning, replaying everything Foron said in her mind, about that girl. “tall and skinny, soft and sweet, with dumples when she similes”

She thought about it so much that, by the end, she couldn’t even tell if she was obsessing over Eamon or just desperately trying to figure out who that girl really was

Wondie looked grber and tried to flash his usual carefree grin but halfway through, his smile faded and just wouldn’t curve any further

Looking at you right now, anyone would think you’re heartbroken,” he said.

He paused, then teased, “But wait, you never even dated anyone, so how could you be heartbroken?”

Rosie shot him a glare, wanting to snap back, bo when she opened her mouth, she realized she didn’t even have the energy
