Chapter 240
Rosie stood frozen, not really sure what was going on, until Henry called out to her and brought her back to reahty
Henry frowned. “Is he your classmate?”
Rosie nodded. ‘He’s a senior.”
She felt a bit strange, not sure why Eamon had acted like that, but she didn’t think too much about it and just took out the
cake.
She held up two candles for Henry to choose from: one was a simple wavy silver candle, and the other was a number candle shaped like 27.
‘Which candle do you want, Henry?” Rosie asked.

Henry glanced at the number candle, his brow arching. ‘Damn, am I really 27 already?’ he thought.
That’s way too obvious, Henry grumbled to himself.
He pointed at the wavy silver candle. “This one.”
Rosie stuck the wavy silver candle into the cake and dashed over to turn off the lights.
Henry pulled a lighter from his pocket, and Natalie asked for it, then used it to light the candle.
The flame flickered, casting a warm orange glow over their faces.
Make a wish!” Natalie said.
Her voice was calm and steady, but to Henry, it sounded especially nice.
He sat on the couch, glancing at Natalie standing across from him. The candlelight flickered, casting a warm glow over her iny, doll-like face.
He let a small smile slip, looked away, and closed his eyes.
Rosie, trying not to laugh, picked up her film camera, framed both Natalie and Henry in the shot, and pressed the shutter to capture the moment.
A few seconds later, Henry slowly opened his eyes and blew out the candle.
Happy birthday, Henry!” Rosie cheered.
She brought out a gift box from behind her back, wrapped in deep blue paper with a silver ribbon. She’d picked it out at the
mall before.
She handed it to him, her eyes sparkling with anticipation
Henry took the box and opened it. Inside was a dark gray tie with a subtle, intricate pattern, understated and elegant, exactly the kind he usually preferred.
Henry smiled and said, “Thanks.”
Rosie beamed, her eyes curving into crescents. “I’m just glad you like it, Henry!”

Rosie couldn’t hold back her laughter at that expectant look on Henry’s face. She’d never seen him like this before.
Guess I was right, Rosie thought Henry really does like Natalie. He’s so excited for her gift!
Natalie pulled a small, deep blue drawstring pouch from her pocket, about the size of her pair.
“Here’s your birthday present,” she said.
Henry took the pouch, his fingers lingering on the soft fabric. Inside, he could feel something hard and round, like small
beads
He untied the drawstring and poured the contents into his palm, a bracelet made of deep brown beads, all uniform in size. smooth and polished, with a gentle, warm sheen.
It wasn’t made of wood or jade. There was a faint herbal scent, a subtle blend of mushroom and lettuce. The fragrance wast unpleasant at all; in fact, it felt calming.
“What is this?” Henry asked, glancing at Natalie.
Natalie replied, “They’re traditional medicine beads. They’re supposed to calm your mind and help you sleep.”
She looked at him again. “You pull all-nighters way too often. I’ve seen you looking worn out, with those dark circles under your eyes. This should help.”
She said it matter-of-factly, just stating the obvious.
Henry looked down at the bracelet in his palm. There were exactly eighteen beads, not one more, not one less.
Each bead had been carefully polished, smooth and free of any rough edges. The holes were drilled straight, and the whote bracelet was strung together perfectly.
This wasn’t something you could just buy anywhere. Natalie had made it herself.
Rosie leaned in for a closer look, her eyes lighting up.
“Wow, it’s so pretty! Natalie, when did you make it? Why didn’t you tell me?” Rosie asked.
Natalie just shrugged, “Made it when I had some spare time”

The Summerset Go Championship came around quickly, and this year it was being held at the Darshan Hotel in Harbor City.
By the time Natalie arrived, the hotel’s event hall was already buzzing with activity. A long line snaked through the lobby. with reporters, spectators, and players packed in shoulder to shoulder.
She glanced at the line, then pulled her tournament badge from her bag and slipped it around her neck.
A staff member glanced at her badge, checked her in, and stepped aside to let her through.
Inside, the venue was way quieter than outside. Dozens of tables were set up for Go, each with a dark gray board and the stones already arranged for the match.
Natalie found her seat, sat down, and started scrolling through her phone.
More people began to settle in around her. The tournament had no age or gender limits, so there were all kinds of players. some with hair, some with white hair.
“Hey, young lady, what’s your Go rank?” The elderly man with glasses leaned over from the next seat, his tone gentle and friendly.
“No rank,” Natalie replied politely, looking up at him.
The old man paused, thinking she was just an amateur here for the experience, then chuckled. “Oh, so you’re just here for the experience?”
“Yeah,” Natalie nodded, not really engaging further.
The old man didn’t ask any more questions.
A young man in a dark gray suit sat down across from her, his hair slicked back and perfectly neat. He glanced at Natalie. then at the badge on her chest, “Clark Go Club, Natalie Moore.”
He frowned. ‘No rank, and I’ve never heard of her, he thought.
He sized Natalie up, thinking, ‘If she’s my first-round opponent, I’ve got this in the bag.
His badge also read “Clark Go Club, Calvin Saenz, 4-dan professiona!”
