Chapter 288
Her long lashes lowered as she looked at the screen.
“He would never do that.
Winter said it softly, only five words.
He would never do that.
In the driver’s seat, Roy’s hand tightened abruptly on the steering wheel.
Then he heard Winter let out a quiet, self-mocking laugh.
“Do you think maybe I’m…”
Beneath the lowered brim of his black cap, his dark eyes held back a storm of tangled emotion.
Winter let out a slow breath. “You can’t say this to anyone else, or I’ll just sound pathetic.
“But speaking objectively, Chris would never do something like this. Back when his uncle was running Xander Corporation, the company was already in trouble. If Chris were really the kind of person who cut corners like that, he would not have spent two straight months working late into the night. If he weren’t as tough as he is, he would have collapsed a long time ago.
Roy’s fingers stiffened for a moment before he slowly typed:
“How do you know that?”
“Because my room was right next to his. Every night, I waited for him to come back from the study before I went to sleep.”
As she said it, Winter gave a small wave of her hand, like she couldn’t bear to look too closely at those memories
now.
“That was just silly teenage girl stuff. Looking back on it now, I feel stupid.”
Back then, every time she thought about how her room and Chris’s were side by side, it felt like fate. Like it had all been arranged by heaven.
A lot had happened while they were living in neighboring rooms.
For example, when she got her first period at thirteen, it was Chris who bought her pads.
That night, she had just gotten out of the shower and was sitting on the edge of the bed drying her hair when she suddenly felt a warm rush below her. She looked down and saw blood on the sheets.
By then, plenty of girls at school had already started developing, and she knew what it meant.
But because it was her first time, she had been completely lost. Mrs. Xander Sr. had gone abroad to stay with her aunt, and Winter had panicked, not knowing who to turn to.
She had just opened her bedroom door in a panic when she ran straight into Chris as he was passing by.
Chris caught hold of her arm. Seeing how flustered and tongue-tied she was, his gaze drifted casually to the faint red stain on her pale pink bedspread.
