Chapter 291
Dominic watched him casually toss the peeled-off scar into the trash, and for some reason, his temper flared all over again.
All that mattered was that someone believed him?
The sight of Chris acting so composed, like nothing in the world could touch him, only annoyed Dominic more.
“Of course someone believes you,” Dominic said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “Skyla couldn’t get ahold of you, so she called me instead. She said she refused to believe you’d ever do something like that. Wow. Someone believes in you unconditionally. You must be feeling pretty good about yourself.”
Chris ignored him. “That has nothing to do with me.”
He stood, turned on the faucet, and splashed water over his face. Droplets ran down the sharp line of his jaw and fell into the sink.
In his mind, he saw Winter again. Sitting in the passenger seat, both hands wrapped around a cup of hot milk, she had said those words slowly and with complete certainty.
-He would never do that.
Behind him, Dominic kept going, fanning the flames on purpose. “You have no idea what she told me on the phone. She said if you were framed and ended up in prison, she’d wait for you outside for the rest of her life.”
-I know he can get through this.
Winter’s voice in the passenger seat still seemed to linger in his ears.
All at once, Chris braced both hands against the sink and slowly lifted his eyes to the mirror.
“You told Skyla?”
Caught by the sharp, heavy look in Chris’s eyes, Dominic immediately realized this wasn’t the time to joke around.
His usual teasing tone disappeared. “No.”
He loved provoking that cold, unreadable face of Chris’s. After all these years, the only time he had really managed to get a rise out of him was back on the island, when he teased him about being jealous of William. That was the one time he had seen Chris’s anger show for real.
But joking was joking. When it was time to be serious, Dominic never crossed the line.
“You said not to tell anyone, so I didn’t.”
To Dominic, Skyla was nothing more than a woman who had once saved his friend’s life. Nothing else. After learning she had actually hired someone to kill, he could barely stand hearing her speak. It felt like she polluted the air around him.
