Although her cooking had never been good to begin with.
“Ms. Scott, are you sure you’re okay?” Zion could tell something was wrong.
Winter shook her head. She was just about to answer when a sharp pain stabbed through her chest, and she suddenly coughed up blood.
“Ms. Scott!”
Zion’s panicked voice seemed to grow farther and farther away. The world spun around her. Her body went limp, and her consciousness started slipping away.
Just before she collapsed, she thought she heard a baby crying in her ear.
In the endless dark, Winter felt herself falling, as if she were dropping into a bottomless pit.
When she opened her eyes again, she found William staring at her with naked worry in his eyes.
A tear slipped from the corner of her eye as she looked at him in a daze.
The moment he saw her awake, William’s eyes lit up. He turned and shouted, “Doctor, get over here!”
The medical staff immediately crowded around the bed. The doctor lifted her eyelids and checked her eyes.
“Ms. Scott, can you hear me?” the doctor asked, lowering the penlight and studying her face.
But Winter lay there without moving at all.
William’s expression darkened at once. He could tell something was wrong. “What’s going on?”
The doctor shook his head. “Her test results look fine. This may be psychological. Did something happen before this? Some kind of emotional shock?”
William turned sharply to Zion. “Tell me.”
Zion quickly shook his head. “Nothing. I was with Ms. Scott all afternoon. We were just playing games on our phones.”
He hesitated, then added, “There were a few times when I saw her thumping her chest with her fist. Maybe she got annoyed because my gameplay was so bad. But she is too good–natured to actually get upset over something like that. Later she even carried me through a bunch of matches. Other than that, nothing happened. I can swear to it.”
The more he spoke, the more guilty he looked.
“Before we were about to leave, I did notice she didn’t look well. I was just about to ask if she wanted to go to the hospital. But before I could, she coughed up blood and passed out.
The more Zion thought about it, the more horrible he felt. Maybe if he had caught on sooner, this wouldn’t have happened.

He clutched her hand tighter, then looked up at the doctor and said in a cold, hard voice, “Do something. Now!”
Zion froze for a second.
William had always been even–tempered, gentler even than Winter most of the time. Unless someone truly crossed a line, the worst he usually did was throw out a sarcastic comment or two. Zion had never seen this side of him before. The force in his voice was sharp enough to make the whole room tense.
And honestly, Zion was just as worried about her.
“Winnie!” William froze.
